Victim of serious assault succumbs to injuries

A man who was injured in a serious assault earlier this month has died in hospital.

At approximately 2 p.m., on Thursday, July 18, 2019, police officers driving in the 3500 block of 32 Avenue N.E., were flagged down by a citizen seeking help for a man in medical distress who was located in the south end of the Whitehorn Safeway parking lot, near the gas station. Officers pulled over and provided first aid. The man, whose injuries are believed to have been caused by a serious assault, was taken to hospital where his condition deteriorated.

On Monday, July 29, 2019, the man succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy was conducted Tuesday, July 30, 2019.

The man has been identified as Darrin Thomas AMOND, 40, of Calgary.

Police continue to seek public assistance for any information in relation to this incident, which is now being investigated as a homicide.

“The assault happened near a parking lot in the middle of the afternoon and we believe there are people who likely have information,” said Staff Sergeant Martin Schiavetta with the CPS Homicide Unit. “We are looking for assistance from anyone who may have witnessed the assault or suspicious activity leading up to the assault.”
