Vehicle located in serious hit and run collision involving pedestrian

A vehicle sought in a hit and run collision that left a pedestrian seriously injured downtown on Tuesday has been located. The investigation into the driver’s identity is ongoing.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2022, police were called to the intersection of Fifth Avenue S.E. and Macleod Trail S.E., for reports of a collision. Prior to the collision, a woman in her 20s was waiting to cross at the intersection, standing in the northwest corner of the intersection. Investigators believe a silver/grey, early 2020s, Jeep Gladiator, travelling at a high rate of speed in the far left lane of Fifth Avenue passed other traffic, ran a red light and entered the intersection as the pedestrian stepped into the roadway to cross.

The pedestrian was struck by the front driver’s side of the Jeep Gladiator and the vehicle fled eastbound along Fifth Avenue. The pedestrian was transported to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.

Following the collision, police sought assistance from the public in locating the Jeep Gladiator. A few hours later, the vehicle was located by police in a residential parkade in Bridgeland, in the 900 block of Centre Avenue N.E. The investigation into the identity of the driver is ongoing.

Investigators are asking witnesses to come forward who might have dashcam footage from the downtown core, including the areas of Edmonton Trail and Memorial Drive, at or around 3:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2022, which may show the collision or help to identify the driver involved.
