Update: City officials and CPS remind citizens: Personal fireworks are strictly prohibited in city limits

The City of Calgary is actively enforcing Bylaw 55M2014, which prohibits the sale and display of consumer fireworks and firecrackers without a permit. Recently, two Calgary businesses have been found in violation of Section 19.4(1) of the bylaw, which forbids the display, sale, or offering for sale of consumer fireworks.

The businesses in question are:

1. Super Save Cash & Carry, located at #2110, 5850 88 Ave NE
2. Bombay Spices, located at #125, 920 36 St NE

Both businesses were observed selling consumer fireworks without the required permits. Under Section 19.4(1), such violations carry a minimum penalty of $500, with a specified penalty of $750. These actions are part of the City’s broader efforts to maintain public safety by regulating the sale and use of fireworks, particularly around high-traffic periods where fireworks are commonly purchased for celebrations.

“Public safety is our highest priority, and the unauthorized sale of consumer fireworks creates significant risk for our community,” said Michael Briegel, Deputy Chief of Business Safety. “By enforcing these regulations, we aim to reduce fire hazards and ensure that fireworks are handled responsibly and legally. We urge all businesses to respect these regulations and work with us to keep Calgary safe, especially as demand for fireworks tends to rise around holidays and community events.”

The City reminds all businesses and residents that fireworks are regulated for safety reasons. Businesses must comply with permit requirements or face penalties. As part of ongoing public awareness, The City will continue to conduct inspections and enforce compliance with Bylaw 55M2014.
