Update Aug. 2: Critical water main break affecting city-wide water usage

The City of Calgary will remain in Stage 1 Outdoor Water Restrictions for the immediate future as work continues on monitoring and analyzing data collected in the Bearspaw South Feeder Main.

Thursday’s water use demand was 706 million litres. This was higher than expected, although hot temperatures and sprinkler use were likely contributing factors. There have been no new wire snaps since what was reported yesterday.

However, in light of recent wire snaps, we have made a decision out of caution to turn off the third pump at the Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant. This means that we are currently flowing water through the feeder main at 70 per cent of its maximum capacity. Based on this flow rate, we can meet demand under Stage 1 Outdoor Water Restrictions, but we would not be able to meet demand if we lifted restrictions entirely.

Analysis and planning work is continuing through the weekend.

Today and tomorrow, the weather is forecast to stay warm and dry. Here is a reminder of some of the use that is allowed under Stage 1 Outdoor Water Restrictions. This stage allows for use of a sprinkler, soaker hose or in-ground sprinkling system for up to two hours a week on a set sprinkler schedule. You can water your trees, shrubs and gardens using a watering can or hose with a nozzle on any day. Please continue to use your water wisely.
