Update #3: Police investigate fatal stabbing

The victim of last week’s fatal stabbing has been identified and one man has been charged.

Our Homicide Unit continues to investigate the exact circumstances that led to a fatal altercation on Friday, Oct. 2, 2026, in the downtown community of East Village. At this point in the investigation, it is believed the victim and offender were known to each other and had previous confrontations. The motive behind the stabbing is still unknown.

Following an autopsy completed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the victim has been identified as Lionel Fontem ESSEMBIENG, 31, of Calgary.

Newton Kioi NG’ANG’A, 28, of Calgary, has been charged with one count of second-degree murder. He will next appear in court on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026.

“Our officers were the first on scene, arriving within minutes of receiving the call. They immediately provided medical assistance to the victim while simultaneously securing the area, searching for the offender and gathering critical information,” says Deputy Chief Cliff O’Brien. “Although this is not the outcome any of us hoped for, our members’ professionalism and dedication reflect the commitment they bring to keeping Calgarians safe every day. I commend the officers involved for their efforts and continued service to our community.”

This is Calgary’s 15th homicide this year.
