Update: Police investigate suspicious death downtown
Our officers continue to investigate the suspicious death of a man after he was located deceased in downtown Calgary earlier this week.
At approximately 5:20 a.m., on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2025, we were called to the 700 block of Fifth Street S.W., by a passerby, for reports that a man was unresponsive on a sidewalk. Upon arrival our officers located one man deceased.
Following an autopsy completed today, Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2025, by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the victim has been identified as 34-year-old Samuel MULUGETA, of Calgary.
Samuel’s death is believed to be the result of a fatal assault.
Prior to being located on the sidewalk, it is believed the victim walked along the Third Street S.W. CTrain platform at approximately 4:20 a.m., when he crossed paths with a group of individuals who are believed to be known to him.
In the brief interaction between the victim and the group, it is believed Samuel was robbed of his belongings and suffered an injury, later resulting in his death.
Evidence suggests this was a targeted attack and police believe Samuel walked for several blocks while injured before he succumbed to his injuries on the sidewalk where he was later located.
Investigators are looking to speak to anyone who was in recent contact with Samuel or who knows of his whereabouts in the early morning hours on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2025.
Investigators are also requesting public assistance to locate three suspects believed to be involved in the fatal assault.
The first suspect is described as a woman with a medium build, light-coloured hair, shaved on the sides, and was last seen wearing a black jacket, black pants, light-coloured boots and was carrying a backpack.
The second suspect is described as a man who was last seen wearing a dark-coloured jacket, black pants, black shoes and was carrying a bag.
The third suspect is described as a man with a medium build, and was last seen wearing a black jacket, light-coloured pants, a black and white hat, black shoes and was carrying a bag.
