Two youths climb on Deerfoot Trail overpass

The Calgary Police Service has resolved an incident that resulted in a very short closure of Deerfoot Trail during the Thursday rush hour.

At approximately 5 p.m., on Thursday, July 19, 2018, police responded to reports that two teenage girls were in a dangerous place on the overpass that crosses Deerfoot Trail at 17 Avenue S.E. The girls were sitting on the overpass' railing and dangling thier legs over the highway.

Officers closed Deerfoot Trail for a short period to protect public safety while they established contact with the girls. Patrol officers were able to negotiate the girls back onto the overpass and safely took them into custody at approximately 5:35 p.m.

The girls’ motivation for climbing over the railing is not known at this point, however, the investigation is ongoing. No one was injured during the incident.

Deerfoot Trail has been reopened in all directions.
