Two youths charged in iPhone robbery series
We have charged a 12-year-old and a 16-year-old after it is believed they were responsible for the thefts of multiple iPhones in the southwest community of Braeside.
In January 2025, the victim posted an online ad to sell her iPhone, and on Friday, Jan. 24, 2025, at approximately 2 p.m., she arranged to meet an unknown person who was interested in buying the iPhone.
The victim agreed to meet the buyer in the 11000 block of Braniff Road S.W.
Upon arrival, she got out of her vehicle and was met by two young boys who stole the iPhone and bear sprayed her before fleeing the area on foot.
The victim reported the incident to police.
On Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025, and Sunday, Jan. 26, 2025, two subsequent incidents were reported to police, where once again, the victims attended the 11000 block of Braniff Road S.W., to sell an iPhone, and were met by two young males who stole the iPhone and sprayed them with bear spray before fleeing on foot.
Members of our Robbery Unit began an investigation, and on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2025, executed a search warrant at a residence located in the community of Braeside.
Several items were seized including five cellphones, three cans of bear spray, clothing believed to be used during the robberies, a pellet gun and more than $22,000 worth of new clothing believed to be stolen.
As a result, two youths were charged in relation to these incidents.
A 12-year-old male is charged with three counts of robbery, two counts of possession of a dangerous weapon and two counts of failure to comply.
A 16-year-old male is charged with three counts of robbery and one count of possession of a dangerous weapon.
The youths are scheduled to appear in court on Friday, Feb. 28, 2025, and cannot be named under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Members from our Youth Services Section have offered supports and resources to the youths.
