Two men charged in stabbing incident outside northwest library

We have charged two men in relation to a stabbing that occurred outside the Louise Riley Library earlier this week.

On Monday, Feb. 13, 2023, at approximately 3 p.m., the victim, a 46-year-old man, was standing outside the library located at 1904 14 Avenue N.W., when he observed the suspects, two men, he believed were attempting to sell narcotics to an unknown woman.

The victim asked the suspects to leave the area when a verbal altercation began, which quicky escalated to a physical altercation.

One of the suspects subsequently stabbed the victim and he was transported to hospital in serious, life-threatening condition, but has since been upgraded to stable.

Both suspects fled the scene.

Once officers arrived, several witnesses came forward with information and CCTV footage of the incident was obtained, including suspect descriptions.

A short time later, at approximately 5:30 p.m., members of the library security team at the Central Library, located downtown at 800 Third Street S.E., noticed two men with similar descriptions to the suspects enter the building.

The security guards contacted police and the suspects were taken into custody a short distance from the Central Library.

As a result, we have charged, Samif NAMIER, 20, and Bati AHMED MOHAMED, 20, both of Burnaby, B.C.

NAMIER was charged with three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of crime, and aggravated assault.

MOHAMED was charged with aggravated assault.

Both appeared in court today, Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2023.
