Two charged with fraud in relation to funds stolen from local cricket league
We have charged two men after it is believed they are responsible for misappropriating money belonging to the Calgary & District Cricket League (C&DCL).
In 2017, the newly appointed president of the C&DCL, noticed several concerns within the league’s financial records and conducted an internal investigation to audit the organization’s current and historical financial status.
Following the internal review, several discrepancies were discovered, and the league’s president contacted police to report financial fraud.
The Calgary Police Service launched an investigation and discovered between January 2014 and December 2016, the former treasurer and former president of the C&DCL are believed to have misappropriated approximately $200,000 from the league.
The funds were misappropriated through cheque payments to construction businesses and contractors which the former treasurer and former president, or their immediate family members, had connections to.
These payments were allegedly made to the businesses for repairs and upgrades to the C&DCL clubhouse and grounds located at Riley Park, however, the work was either never completed, or was done to a substandard quality using inferior products.
Additionally, the costs for the work were highly inflated.
As a result, we have charged Salman Khan SHAHZAD, 46, and Syed Wajahat ALI, 45, both of Milton, Ont., with one count each of fraud over $5,000 and theft over $5,000.
They will next appear in court tomorrow, Thursday, March 13, 2025.
This was a multi-jurisdictional investigation involving individuals who were out-of-province and required several production orders and warrants that were executed in relation to the investigation.
