Two charged in infrastructure wire theft

One man and one woman have been charged in relation to the theft of telecommunication wire that left more than 2,000 Calgarians without internet or phone service.

On Friday, Dec. 8, 2023, it is believed three suspects entered multiple manholes in the 2000 block of Glenmore Trail S.E. and stole critical infrastructure wire. As a result, 2,056 citizens in the area were left without access to phone or internet service and approximately $276,000 in property damage was incurred.

On Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024, a search warrant was executed on a residence in the 3000 block of 37th Street S.W. Investigators found evidence consistent with the theft and resale of copper wire.

Jared John HIEBERT, 50, of Calgary, is charged with one count of theft over $5,000, one count of trafficking stolen property and two counts of failure to comply with an undertaking. HIEBERT will next appear in court on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2024.

Tamara Lynne HURLBERT, 40, of Calgary, is charged with one count of theft over $5,000 and two counts of failure to comply with an undertaking. HURLBERT will next appear in court on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2024.
