Two charged in connection with liquor store robbery

The Calgary Police Service has charged two men in connection with a recent liquor store robbery.

At approximately 11:50 p.m., on Friday, June 24, 2016, two men walked into a liquor store in the 5400 block of Temple Drive N.E., where one of the suspects attempted to steal a bottle of alcohol by concealing it in his waistband.

Employees of the store noticed the attempted theft and locked the front doors before the men could leave. An argument broke out between the employees and the two men, which turned physical when one of the suspects threw a bottle at the clerk. Another clerk then hit the offender in the head with a bat. At some point during the altercation, one of the suspects pulled out a gun and fired a shot at one of the clerks, striking him in the arm. He then fired several more shots at the door to get out of the store.

The clerk was transported to hospital for treatment of the gunshot wound and released.

On Monday, July 18, 2016, officers located the two suspects in the 400 block of 18 Avenue S.W., and they were taken into custody without incident.

Charged in connection with this incident is Latef Reakwon TAG EL DIN, 20, and Shakailo Kenneth SPARKS, 22, of no fixed address in Calgary. Each are charged with aggravated assault and robbery. TAG EL DIN faces additional weapons charges in connection with the shooting.
