Two charged following series of break-ins and thefts
We have charged two men in connection with a series of cash register thefts, break-and-enters and one robbery targeting restaurants across the city.
On Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2026, it’s believed the offenders entered several restaurants during operating hours and aggressively grabbed the cash register before fleeing in a stolen white 2003 GMC Sierra.
The following locations were targeted:
· Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2026, 4:25 p.m. – Boyd’s Lobster Shop, located at 1515 D 14th St. S.W.
· Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2026, 4:33 p.m. – One Love Caribbean Restaurant, located at 1510 Sixth St. S.W.
· Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2026, 6:55 p.m. – Oakberry Acai Bowls and Smoothies, located at 1002 17th Ave. S.W.
· Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2026, 7:32 p.m. – Villages Pizza, located at 3915 17th Ave. S.W.
Following collaborative investigative work by patrol teams from Districts 1, 2 and 4, the District 3 General Investigative Unit and Break and Enter Team, the Canine Unit and the Auto Theft Team, officers determined the same suspects are believed to be responsible for the multiple thefts and break-and-enters.
Later on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2026, police located and arrested the suspects at a residence in the community of South Calgary.
On Thursday, Feb. 19, 2026, a search warrant was executed at a residence in the 1700 block of 26th Avenue S.W., resulting in the seizure of evidence that will assist in the ongoing investigation.
As a result, Michael Christopher BEGG, 36, of Lethbridge, has been charged with one count each of robbery and possession of stolen property and three counts of theft under $5,000.
He will next appear in court on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2026.
Matthew James KELLY, 43, of Calgary, has been charged with one count each of robbery and possession of stolen property, five counts of breach of a release order and four counts of a breach of probation order.
He will next appear in court on Monday, March 9, 2026.
This investigation is ongoing.
