Tragic house fire claims lives of one adult and child in Taradale

Two people have died, two others were rescued, and two escaped safely following an early morning house fire in the northeast Calgary community of Taradale on Wednesday, June 26.

Calgary Fire Department crews were called to a home in the 100 block of Taralake Way N.E. shortly after 1 a.m., following 911 reports of a house fire. When firefighters arrived, they encountered heavy flames coming from both the first and second floors of a two-storey residence. The fire was also threatening neighbouring homes. The incident was quickly upgraded to a second alarm for additional resources.

Six people were inside the home at the time. Two adults from the basement suite self-evacuated after smelling smoke. They were assessed at the scene by Alberta Health Services EMS and did not require hospital care.

An adult and a teenager were found stranded on a small roof at the rear of the home, having escaped through a second-storey window. Fire crews used a ground ladder to bring them down safely.

Firefighters initiated an aggressive interior attack and search of the residence. A nine-year-old child was located inside and quickly removed for immediate transfer to EMS for care and transport. One adult was also located deceased within the home.

Three individuals were transported to hospital by EMS. Sadly, one of the children, a nine year old girl, did not survive. 

The Calgary Fire Department extends its heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of those who lost their lives in this tragic incident. Our thoughts are with the family, friends and community members affected by this devastating event.

Calgary police assisted with traffic control, and ATCO and Enmax crews shut off gas and power to the home. Fire investigators remain on scene working to determine the origin and cause of the fire.  With all fires involving serious injury, fatalities or large dollar loss, CFD fire investigators work closely with CPS arson detectives on the investigation.  This fire is not believed to be suspicious. 

It is unknown at this time if there were working smoke alarms in the residence.  The Calgary Fire Department recommends working smoke alarms on every level of the home including inside and outside of sleeping areas.  Home escape ladders are recommended for bedrooms located on the second  floor.
