Townhouse seriously damaged after suspected impaired-driving collision

A townhouse in the northeast community of Cornerstone was seriously damaged late last night when a suspected impaired driver smashed into it. Investigators are looking for any information about the driver and vehicle leading up to the crash, including witnesses or video evidence.

Around 11:15 p.m., on Monday, April 25, 2022, a silver minivan believed to be travelling at a high rate of speed eastbound on 128 Avenue N.E., hit the median of a traffic circle, continued on and wound up embedded inside a townhouse building, affecting two units.

The residents of one of the townhomes had to be rescued by the Calgary Fire Department as the vehicle had destroyed the stairs of their home. Thankfully no residents were physically injured during the crash.

A man, suspected to be the driver, climbed out of the van within the residence, and broke a window on the home to climb outside. He remained on scene and was treated by EMS before being taken into custody for impaired driving. Charges have not yet been laid and the driver cannot be named until that process is complete.

The Calgary Fire Department removed the van and stabilized the townhouse. City engineers have been called out to evaluate the structural integrity of the home.

Investigators learned the van had been stolen an hour before the collision from a mall in Falconridge. The investigation is ongoing.
