Correction: Tip leads to three charged and illegal gun seized

CORRECTION: Kwanele MPOFU has not been charged with drug trafficking. He is charged with one count of proceeds of crime. We apologize for any confusion this may cause.

The investigation is ongoing and we would like to thank the public and the media for their assistance.

Original release:

We heavily rely on information from the public to identify criminal activity within our city. A recent investigation in downtown Calgary began by a tip from the public in July 2022 and culminated in three people arrested for drug-trafficking and a loaded gun being removed from the streets of Calgary.

Acting on a Crime Stoppers tip received last July, an investigation began into the suspected drug activity of a number of individuals in the downtown area. Throughout the fall, enough evidence was gathered that supported search warrants being granted on two residences, in the 900 block of 16 Avenue S.W., and the 800 block of Fourth Avenue S.W., as well as two vehicles.

The following items were seized as a result of the searches:

  • Loaded Taurus 9mm handgun, with the serial number removed, containing a 12-round magazine with 11 rounds
  • 34 rounds of 9mm handgun ammunition
  • 70 grams of powdered cocaine
  • 16 grams of crack cocaine
  • Drug distribution materials
  • $700 cash

“This is yet another great example of the Calgary community coming forward to provide critical information that led to an investigation into dangerous activity occurring in our neighbourhoods. We cannot overstate the importance of the public and police partnership when it comes to community safety and wellbeing and extend our thanks to the anonymous tipster who brought this forward,” says Acting Staff Sergeant Averry Yanyk.

Kwanele MPOFU, 27, has been charged with one count of proceeds of crime. He was released and will next appear in court on Monday, Feb. 27, 2023.
