Three men charged after investigation leads to seizure of drugs and firearms

We have seized more than $250,000 worth of drugs and multiple firearms following an investigation that targeted drug traffickers in Calgary.

In November 2022, we became aware of individuals believed to be involved in drug trafficking in Calgary. As a result, we began a four-month operation that involved numerous police resources including undercover investigators, patrol officers, and organized crime detectives.

As a result, on Thursday, March 9, 2023, investigators executed simultaneous search warrants on four residences and two vehicles located throughout Calgary, including in the 500 block of Sixth Avenue S.E., the 100 block of Panatella Close N.W., the 100 block of Tarawood Road N.E., and the 700 block of 25 Avenue N.W. Five men were also taken into custody without incident.

Police seized the following items:

  • 3.3 kilograms of cocaine
  • 625.9 grams of methamphetamine
  • 233.1 grams of fentanyl
  • Four firearms, including a 12-guage shotgun, a Winchester Model 70 rifle, a loaded 9 mm PF-Series Polymer 80 Firearm, with no serial number, and a semi-automatic 6.35 mm handgun
  • Various ammunition
  • Brass knuckles
  • More than $45,000 in Canadian currency
  • Scales and packaging material consistent with use for drug trafficking

Saad KHAN, 36, of Calgary, has been charged with 18 offences, including three counts each of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, careless storage of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm while knowing it’s unauthorized and possession of a weapon obtained by crime, and one count each of unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, tampering with the serial number on a firearm and possession of a prohibited/restricted firearm with ammunition. KHAN will next appear in court on Wednesday, April 12, 2023.  

Syed JAFARY, 31, of Calgary, has been charged with 13 offences, including three counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, two counts each of careless storage of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm while knowing it’s unauthorized and possession of a weapon obtained by crime, and one count each of careless storage of a prohibited device and possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000. JAFARY will next appear in court on Wednesday, April 12, 2023.  

Humzah TARIQ, 27, of Calgary, has been charged with one count of possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000. TARIQ will next appear in court tomorrow, Friday, March 31, 2023.

The remaining two individuals who were taken into custody were released without charges.

These offenders were in possession of unlawfully obtained firearms and created significant risk to Calgarians. The unlawful possession of firearms continues to be a priority for us as resources from across our Service work to target, suppress and disrupt those responsible for gun violence in Calgary.
