The City sets a new national standard for small business customer service

CALGARY — Today marks a first for Calgary businesses. Effective today, The City is the first and only municipality in Canada to allow small business customers to start a new business completely online. Business owners can now apply for a business licence, and apply for applicable permits in a single online application.

“Business owners told us they wanted a faster and easier way to start a business in Calgary,” says Kevin Griffiths, Director of Calgary Building Services at The City. “Our new single online application eliminates the need for business customers to travel, park and spend time in line ups, which not only is more convenient, but saves them time and money. We are pleased to be the first municipality to offer this business service in Canada.”

Calgary businesses can use calgary.ca/mybusiness to:

  • Explore how to operate a small business in Calgary.
  • Apply for necessary approvals, permits and licences for proposed businesses.
  • Register a business with The City of Calgary and apply for the required permits and/or licences.

Later this fall, The City will allow all existing business owners to renew or modify their business online - making it even easier to do business in Calgary.

For those who may need more assistance, an online-chat feature can help business customers get the answers they need.

The City continues to improve the experience for business customers. To learn more about service improvements, visit calgary.ca/pdimprovements or visit calgary.ca/mybusiness for resources and access the new online services for business owners.
