The City is seeking public input on Calgary’s updated Water Efficiency Plan to keep our water supply resilient now and into the future

The City of Calgary is inviting Calgarians to share their perspectives on how we can support efficient water use and conservation, to help shape the tools and tactics in the upcoming 2026 Water Efficiency Plan. This plan guides how Calgary commits to responsible resource use to support a growing population, responding to a changing climate, and making water conservation easier and more accessible for everyone through future investments in programs, infrastructure and education.

Calgary is a growing city built on two small rivers, the Bow and the Elbow, which supply drinking water to more than 1.5 million people across the region, support local businesses and sustain our natural environment.

“Calgary’s past successes in water efficiency show what communities can achieve when residents, businesses and The City work together,” says Rehana Rajabali, Leader, Environmental Planning & Policy. “Water efficiency plays a vital role in protecting Calgary’s environment and economy, while building long-term resilience. Feedback from Calgarians will help guide practical actions that make it easier for everyone to use this shared and vital resource wisely.”

The updated plan will build on the success of Calgary’s original 30-in-30 Water Efficiency Plan launched in 2005. That plan aimed to reduce per-person water use by 30 per cent in 30 years and reached its target roughly a decade early. Reaching our target early was a major milestone, but progress needs to continue.  The updated plan will introduce new actions to encourage efficient indoor and outdoor water use.
