The City and Green Calgary introduce new rain barrel rebate program for spring 2025
The City of Calgary has teamed up with Green Calgary to provide Calgarians with an opportunity to receive a $50 rebate on up to two rain barrels starting April 1, 2025.
“We are pleased with the continued popularity of the Green Calgary rain barrel program,” says Lex van der Raadt, Executive Director of Green Calgary. “Based on our experience from previous years, we know that supply does not always keep up with demand and we wanted to help make rain barrels more affordable to Calgarians who want to use them."
Calgarians purchasing rain barrels from Green Calgary, or a local vendor in Calgary can submit an application form with original receipts for up to two rain barrels per household and receive $50 back per barrel. Eligible purchases are those made after March 31, 2025. The program can rebate a maximum of 3,000 rain barrels.
Green Calgary rain barrels are available for pre-order and cost $75+ GST after the $50 rebate, starting April 1, 2025. They can also be purchased at the following locations between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the dates listed below:
- April 19th - IKEA (8000 11 St. S.E.)
- May 3rd – Dalhousie Co-op (5505 Shaganappi Tr. N.W.)
- June 7th – Genesis Centre (7555 Falconridge Blvd N.E. #10)
- June 14th - Calgary Horticultural Society (2725 33 Ave. S.W.)
“Water use can increase significantly in the summer months due to outdoor watering,” says Nicole Newton, Manager, Natural Environment and Adaptation with The City of Calgary. “Capturing and using rainwater can help reduce use of The City’s water supply in the summer.” She continues, “Not only does captured rainwater keep yards and gardens healthy, rain barrels also help contain water on the property, reduce soil erosion and keep pollutants from being washed into waterways.”
