Teen charged in accidental shooting of woman

The Calgary Police Service has charged a teen in relation to a shooting that left a woman in serious condition over the weekend.

Just before 9:30 p.m., on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016, police were called to a residence in the 1900 block of 30 Street S.E., for a report that a woman had been shot. Upon arrival, a 24-year-old woman was located inside the residence suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. She was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition. Her condition was later upgraded to serious, but stable.

A teen was taken into custody from the residence for questioning. Investigators believe the teen was under the influence of both drugs and alcohol when he picked up a handgun that was unknowingly loaded and accidentally discharged it, striking his sister.

The accused, a 17-year-old male, cannot be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. He has been charged with careless use of a firearm, pointing a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, and knowing possession of a weapon – no registration certificate.
