Excessive noise is defined as any noise that is emitted or produced that is beyond the regular operation of the motor vehicle. Under the Traffic Bylaw, excessive noise refers to a motor vehicle that is capable of emitting any sound exceeding 92 dB(A) while the engine is at idle or emitting any sound exceeding 96 dB(A) while the engine is at any speed greater than idle.

Throughout the operation, conducted in partnership with the Calgary Police Service (CPS), peace officers issued 240 tickets including 41 noise-related violations, and provided 40 warnings to drivers. The initiative targeted ongoing concerns from residents, businesses and City Council about excessive vehicle noise and safety along the corridor.

“Operation Silent Night demonstrated the value of combining officer presence, education, and enforcement to address issues that matter to Calgarians,” said Brad Johnson, Inspector and head of the Traffic Safety Team. “The results show that when drivers understand the rules and see a visible enforcement presence, we can make a meaningful difference in reducing excessive vehicle noise and improving the quality of life for residents and businesses.”

The enforcement initiative focused on overall driver behaviour down along 17 Ave. Some of the violations that officers came across were noisy exhaust systems, excessive engine revving, squealing tires and other unnecessary vehicle noise along with speeding, illegal U-turns, and no registration / or insurance.

"Driver behaviour can disrupt communities and impact livability," said Johnson. "Drivers are responsible for their behaviour and the noise generated by their vehicles at all times."

Team shifts focus to playground zone safety

With the completion of Operation Silent Night, the Traffic Safety Team has resumed playground zone enforcement as students return to classrooms across Calgary. Officers will be rotating through communities across the city, beginning in northwest Calgary, with a focus on speeding and improving safety around schools and playgrounds.

Playground zones are in effect daily from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., year-round. Drivers must obey the posted speed limit and remain alert for children, pedestrians and other vulnerable road users.

Speeding fines in playground zones are based on how far a driver exceeds the posted speed limit. Drivers travelling 15 km/h over the limit can face a fine of $249, while those travelling 30 km/h over the limit can face fines of $543, not including victim surcharges and demerit points.

“Back-to-school season is one of the busiest times of year around schools and playgrounds,” said Johnson. “Slowing down in playground zones is one of the simplest and most effective ways drivers can help keep children safe. A few extra seconds behind the wheel can prevent a serious collision and make our communities safer for everyone.”

The City reminds motorists to reduce their speed, eliminate distractions and watch for children who may enter roadways unexpectedly.

About the Traffic Safety Team

The Traffic Safety Team was established by City Council in November 2023 with $1.69 million in funding to address growing concerns about road safety and vehicle noise. The team includes eight peace officers, two sergeants and one inspector, and works closely with CPS and other partners to support coordinated, city-wide traffic safety enforcement.

At approximately 11 a.m., on Saturday, March 8, 2025, a single-vehicle serious-injury collision occurred in the westbound lanes of Stoney Trail, west of the intersection with Country Hills Boulevard N.W.

At that time, a 2014 BMW M5, driven by a man in his 20s with three adult passengers, all who are men in their 20s, was travelling westbound on Stoney Trail, and was believed to be travelling at a high rate of speed on the left shoulder of the road when the driver lost control of the vehicle. It is believed the vehicle spun and crossed over all three westbound lanes of Stoney Trail, entered the ditch on the right side of the road before rolling several times up a grass embankment and coming to a rest.

All four occupants of the vehicle were ejected from the vehicle. The driver sustained serious injuries while the front passenger sustained critical injuries. The two rear passengers both sustained minor injuries.

Excessive speed is believed to be a factor in the collision.

On March 7, 2017, tow truck driver Courtney Schaefer was struck and killed near Esterhazy, Sask. In remembrance of his death and to remind the public about the dangers these professionals face when working on busy roadways, the eighth annual roadside event will take place tonight.

Between 7 and 8 p.m., today, Thursday, March 6, 2025, a contingent of emergency services vehicles will be parked in both directions alongside Deerfoot Trail near the offramps to Glenmore Trail, as a reminder for drivers to slow down and move over.

When an emergency vehicle, tow truck, or road service vehicle, including a snowplow, is stopped with flashing lights activated, motorists are required to slow down to 60 km/h or the posted speed limit, whichever is lower, in the adjacent lane.

Fines for speeding while passing an emergency vehicle or road service vehicle while stopped on the side of the road with the flashing lights activated are doubled, and can range from $136 to $991, depending on speed.

A mandatory court appearance is required for any motorist travelling more than 50km/h over the speed limit.

“Everyone deserves to make it home safely every day, including those working on our roadways, whether it’s an emergency response or roadside service,” says Sergeant Brad Norman of the Calgary Police Service Traffic Section. “Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, and we are reminding motorists that it is your duty to ensure the safety of those around you while on the road. Slow down, move over, and give emergency and roadside workers room to do their jobs safely.”

At approximately 10:40 a.m., today, Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025, police responded to reports of a serious collision at the intersection of 52 St. N.E. and 26 Ave. N.E.

It is believed a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado, operated by a man in his 20s, was travelling southbound on 52 St. N.E., and was stopped at a red light at 26 Ave. N.E.

At that time, a man in his 60s was crossing 52 St. N.E., heading eastbound, in the confines of the crosswalk. As the man was crossing the street, the traffic light turned green, and the Silverado proceeded through the intersection, striking the pedestrian.

The pedestrian was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The driver remained at the scene and was uninjured.

Neither speed nor impairment by drugs or alcohol are believed to be contributing factors in this collision.

We were called at around 9:30 a.m. today, Thursday, Dec. 26, 2024, for reports of a pharmacy robbery that occurred at Pharmasave Millrise, located at 15 Millrise Blvd. S.W. It is believed the suspect assaulted a pharmacist and fled the scene in a stolen vehicle.

After locating the vehicle, officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver refused to stop and continued driving at high rates of speed.

Due to the unsafe driving behaviour, combined with traffic in the area, a decision was made to not pursue the vehicle on the ground, but instead to use HAWCS as not to further endanger the public.

Approximately 18 minutes later, and as the suspect continued to drive dangerously, he ran through a red light at the intersection of Macleod Trail and Southland Drive S.E., striking multiple vehicles.

As a result of the collision, four people were taken to hospital in critical, life-threatening condition.

The driver was arrested at the scene and remains in custody. Charges are pending. 

We fully recognize the devastating impact on the families of the victims, especially during this time of year, and supports have been offered to help them navigate this difficult time.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been notified due to the earlier police involvement attempting to stop this vehicle. They will review this file to determine if an investigation is required in this case.

At approximately 10:20 a.m., today, Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2024, a serious-injury collision occurred between a car and a pedestrian in the Sobeys parking lot located at 555 Strathcona Blvd. S.W.

At the time, it is believed a 2007 Honda Civic operated by a woman in her 50s was travelling south in the parking lot near the front entrance of the grocery store, when the driver made a sharp left turn into a laneway, striking a woman in her 90s.

The pedestrian suffered life-altering injuries and was transported to hospital.

The driver was uninjured and remained at the scene.

At approximately 9:45 p.m., on Monday, Dec. 23, 2024, police responded to reports of a serious collision that occurred in the eastbound lanes of Glenmore Trail S.W., west of the Crowchild Trail S.W. junction.

At that time, a 2018 BMW M240i, driven by a 19-year-old man, was travelling eastbound on Glenmore Trail S.W. There were two passengers in the vehicle, including an 18-year-old man and a 21-year-old man.

It is believed the driver of the BMW failed to negotiate a bend in the road, and entered the right shoulder of the roadway, ultimately striking a stationary crane.

The crane, operated by a man in his 30s, had broken down and the operator was attempting to repair the crane on the side of the road when the collision occurred.

The driver of the BMW sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital.

The 18-year-old passenger was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition where he eventually succumbed to his injuries.

The 21-year-old passenger was transported to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The crane operator was uninjured.

Excessive speed and alcohol are believed to be possible factors in this collision. Charges against the driver are pending.

At approximately 7 p.m., on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2024, a collision occurred at Elbow Drive S.W. and 61 Avenue S.W.

At that time, a man in his 50s was walking westbound, crossing Elbow Drive S.W. at the intersection of 61 Avenue S.W., in a marked crosswalk, when he was struck by a 2024 Ford Escape travelling southbound on Elbow Drive S.W.

The driver of the Ford Escape, a woman in her 80s, pulled over to help the pedestrian. At the same time, another vehicle travelling southbound along Elbow Drive S.W., a 2009 Pontiac Vibe driven by a woman in her 70s, struck the pedestrian.

Sadly, the pedestrian succumbed to their injuries and was declared deceased at the scene.

Both drivers were uninjured and remained at the scene.

Approximately one hour later, at 8 p.m., a 2014 Toyota Prius, driven by a man in his 40s, was travelling north on Crowchild Trail N.W. near Fifth Avenue N.W. when it approached a broken-down vehicle in the right lane. As the driver of the Toyota exited the vehicle to help the other motorist, the Toyota began to roll backwards. The man attempted to stop the Toyota from rolling and became pinned underneath the vehicle.

Sadly, the man suffered fatal injuries and was declared deceased at the scene.

Neither speed, alcohol nor drugs are considered factors in either collision.

On Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2024, at approximately 1:40 p.m., police were called for reports of a collision at the intersection of Cornerstone Avenue N.E. and Cornerstone Street N.E.

It is believed a sedan, operated by a woman in her 30s with a small child passenger, was travelling southbound on Cornerstone Street N.E., approaching the intersection. After the sedan stopped at the stop sign, the vehicle entered the intersection, and crossed into the path of an eastbound SUV driven by a man in his 50s, who was proceeding with the right of way.

The SUV struck the sedan, and came to a rest on the front lawn of a nearby residence. The sedan rotated and came to a rest in the intersection facing northbound.

The woman was transported to hospital in serious condition. The child passenger was uninjured. The man was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Yesterday, Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2024, at approximately 5:20 p.m., police were called to the area of 24 Street S.W. and Bridlecrest Way S.W., for reports of a serious collision that occurred between a sedan and a Calgary Transit bus.

It is believed the sedan, driven by a woman in her 40s, was travelling southbound on 24 Street S.W., approaching the intersection at Bridlecrest Way S.W., when the sedan crossed into the path of the northbound travelling bus.

The sedan struck the bus head-on. Despite life-saving measures provided by first responders, the woman was declared deceased at the scene.

At approximately 3:35 a.m., today, Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024, police were called for reports of a single-vehicle collision that occurred in the southbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail S.E., at the Peigan Trail S.E. interchange.

At that time, a white 2015 GMC Savana van, driven by a man in his 60s, was travelling southbound on Deerfoot Trail when the vehicle struck the concrete barrier of the median just south of the Peigan Trail off-ramp.

The van then crossed the three southbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail before leaving the roadway, ultimately striking the bridge deck of the Peigan Trail overpass before rolling onto its roof and coming to a rest in the southbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail.

The driver and lone occupant of the van was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., today, Friday, Sept. 6, 2024, police were called for reports of a collision near the 2600 block of northbound Deerfoot Trail S.E. Upon arrival, it is believed a motorcycle, driven by a man in his 20s, was travelling northbound on Deerfoot Trail near Peigan Trail S.E., and collided with the rear of the SUV.

The rider was transported to hospital in serious but stable condition. The driver and sole occupant of the SUV was uninjured.

As a result, northbound Deerfoot Trail remains closed between Peigan Trail S.E. and 17 Avenue S.E.

For the month of September, with back-to-school enforcement in playground zones, photo radar will be focusing on the communities of Altadore, Arbour Lake, Aspen Woods, Auburn Bay, Bridgeland-Riverside, Canyon Meadows, Dover, Forest Lawn, Glendale, Highwood, Huntington Hills, MacEwan, Martindale, Scenic Acres, and Winston Heights-Mountview.

As well as photo radar, there are 57 Intersection Safety Camera (ISC) locations throughout the city. These cameras can photograph vehicles entering the intersections during all phases of the signal, including red light infractions.

These cameras continue to reduce collisions and foster a safer driving environment at our intersections.

The speed on green initiative uses up to 54 of these ISC locations to capture vehicles that speed through green and yellow lights. Speeding fines reflect how fast you are travelling over the limit. Speeds in excess of 50 km/hr over the speed limit result in an appearance before a judge.

These drivers not only put themselves in danger, but they also endanger the lives of others.

At approximately 5:50 p.m., yesterday, Wednesday, July 31, 2024, we responded to reports of a collision involving a motorcycle and a pickup truck near the intersection of 36 Street S.E. and 50 Avenue S.E.

It is believed a blue 2007 Honda CBR 1000 motorcycle, operated by a 33-year-old man, was travelling westbound along 50 Avenue S.E., approaching the intersection. At the same time, a white 2005 GMC Silverado truck, driven by a 47-year-old man, was travelling eastbound along 50 Avenue S.E., and started to turn northbound onto 36 Street S.E., when the motorcycle collided with the truck.

The rider became separated from the motorcycle, before coming to a rest on the grassy shoulder of the intersection and was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The truck came to a rest in the southbound lanes of 36 Street S.E.

The driver of the pickup truck was uninjured and remained at the scene.

In the early morning hours of today, Monday, July 15, 2024, a collision occurred in the area of Buffalo Run Boulevard S.W., at the interchange with Anderson Road S.W.

It is believed a 2008 grey Nissan Altima, driven by a 78-year-old man, was travelling west on Anderson Road S.W., when the man failed to negotiate the southward bend in the roadway leading on to Buffalo Run Boulevard S.W.

The Nissan continued westward, leaving the roadway and struck a retaining wall, which is part of the bridge deck structure of Tsuut'ina Trail S.W. The vehicle rolled over several times before coming to a rest.

Upon police arrival, the man was located outside of the vehicle and pronounced deceased on-scene.

At approximately 7:25 a.m., today, Monday, July 8, 2024, a collision occurred between a 2006 Honda CBR600 and a 2003 Toyota Corolla at the intersection of 14 Street N.W. and 64 Avenue N.W.

At the time, the motorcycle, driven by a 24-year-old man, was travelling southbound on 14 Street N.W., approaching the intersection.

At the same time, the Toyota Corolla, driven by an 84-year-old woman, was entering the intersection from the northbound turn lane of 14 Street N.W., turning left into the parking lot of Nose Hill Park.

The motorcyclist attempted to brake, causing the motorcycle to slide on its side and become separated from the rider. The motorcycle and the rider collided with the car.

The driver of the Toyota Corolla remained at the scene and was uninjured.

The motorcyclist was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition.

At approximately 12:20 a.m., today, Tuesday, July 2, 2024, police were called for reports of a pedestrian who was struck by a Calgary Transit bus in the intersection of 17 Avenue and 44 Street S.E.

It is believed the bus was travelling westbound along 17 Avenue S.E. and proceeded to cross 44 Street S.E. on a green traffic signal. At the same time, an 18-year-old man was trying to diagonally cross 17 Avenue S.E. towards the northwest corner of the intersection when he was struck by the bus.

Despite life-saving efforts from first responders, the pedestrian was declared deceased at the scene.

The driver of the bus remained at the scene and was uninjured, and there were no reported injuries to any of the passengers on the bus.

At approximately 3:45 a.m., today, Tuesday, June 25, 2024, police were called for reports of a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle on southbound Stoney Trail north of McKnight Trail N.E.

Prior to the collision, police were notified of two males who witnesses described as walking into traffic, allegedly trying to stop vehicles.

At that time, a 2010 Cadillac CTS4, driven by a 25-year-old man, was traveling in the far-right lane of southbound Stoney Trail N.E. It is believed a 19-year-old male pedestrian entered into the path of the Cadillac, and was struck by the vehicle, which ultimately came to a stop on the roadway.

The driver of the Cadillac remained at the scene and was uninjured.

The pedestrian was transported to hospital where they remain in critical condition.

The second pedestrian, a 13-year-old boy, was uninjured.

At the same time, an SUV was travelling eastbound along Memorial Drive S.E. approaching 47 Street S.E., and struck the man, who was ultimately declared deceased at the scene.

The driver fled prior to police arrival and continued travelling eastbound before abandoning the vehicle. Police located the vehicle a short time later and are continuing to search for the driver.

The motorcyclist was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition, where he remains. The driver of the car was transported to hospital with minor injuries.

Shortly after midnight on the morning of Saturday, April 20, 2024, a serious-injury collision occurred at the intersection of 16 Avenue and First Street N.E.

It is believed a 2020 Audi S5, driven by a 21-year-old man with a 19-year-old female passenger, was travelling eastbound at a high rate of speed along 16 Avenue N.E. At the same time, a 2020 Honda Civic, operated by a 29-year-old woman, was travelling westbound on 16 Avenue N.E. waiting to turn south onto First Street N.E.

It is believed the Honda was struck by the Audi while trying to turn, causing the Honda to spin and come to a rest on the median facing eastbound. The Audi mounted the curb and struck a building along 16 Avenue N.E.

The driver of the Honda was transported to hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the Audi was transported to hospital for treatment of minor injuries, and the passenger was also transported to hospital with serious injuries.

Speed is being investigated as a factor in the collision; alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the collision.

At approximately 1:40 p.m., on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, a 2012 Hyundai Veloster operated by a 29-year-old man, was travelling westbound on 61 Avenue S.E. towards the intersection at 84 Street S.E. It is believed the Hyundai was travelling at a high rate of speed.

At the same time, a semi-truck operated by a 44-year-old man was travelling eastbound on 61 Avenue S.E. towards 84 Street. S.E.

It is believed the driver of the Hyundai lost control of the vehicle, crossed over the centre line and into the path of the semi-truck, resulting in a head-on collision.

The driver of the Hyundai was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition. The driver of the semi-truck remained at the scene and was not injured.

On Monday, Jan. 29, 2024, at approximately 9:15 a.m., a three-vehicle collision occurred in the 1500 block of 36 Street S.E. 

At the time, an Acura SUV, operated by a man in his 30s, was travelling northbound on 36 Street S.E., with a woman in her 40s in the front-passenger seat. As the vehicle was approaching the 1500 block, it crossed over the centre line and struck an oncoming Honda SUV, operated by a woman in her mid-20s. 

Upon being struck, the Honda rotated into the path of a Hyundai SUV, which was travelling southbound on 36 Street S.E., and being driven by a female in her 30s. The Hyundai struck the Honda, pushing the Honda until it came to a rest on the curb.

The Acura, came to a rest on southbound 36 Street S.E. The Hyundai stopped shortly after in its lane of travel.

The driver of the Acura was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries, while the passenger sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. The drivers of both the Honda and the Hyundai sustained minor injuries.

On Sunday, Jan. 28, 2024, at approximately 4:10 a.m., a collision occurred near the intersection of 22 Avenue N.E. and the 100 block of Pinemill Mews N.E.

At the time, it is believed a dispute occurred between the occupants of a vehicle and a 16-year-old female pedestrian.

The driver attempted to leave while the pedestrian was holding on to the vehicle. The pedestrian fell and was subsequently run over by the vehicle.

The driver and other occupants checked on the pedestrian, but then returned to the vehicle and left the scene.

The pedestrian sustained serious, life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

The vehicle was located later in the morning and seized by police.

The driver, a 16-year-old male, came forward and has spoken to investigators. The other occupants of the vehicle have yet to be identified.

At approximately 6:25 p.m., on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024, a white 2017 Ford Escape, driven by a 34-year-old man, was travelling west along 24 Avenue N.E., approaching the intersection at Centre Street N.E.

At the same time, a white 2014 Lexus 250, driven by a 28-year-old man, with a 31-year-old woman in the front passenger seat, was travelling north on Centre Street N.E.

The Ford Escape failed to stop before entering the intersection. A stop sign, intended for westbound traffic, was lying on the ground within the corner of the intersection and not in the expected upright position.

The Ford Escape continued into the intersection and struck the rear right corner of the Lexus 250 as it passed, causing the Lexus 250 to rotate and cross into the southbound lanes of Centre Street N.E.

The Ford Escape came to rest on the west side of Centre Street.

The Lexus 250 was then struck by a silver 2012 Volkswagen Touareg, driven by a 50-year-old woman, who was travelling south along Centre Street N.E.

The driver of the Ford Escape sustained minor injuries.

The driver of the Lexus 250 was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition. The passenger was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Volkswagen Touareg was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

At approximately 1:20 p.m., on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2023, we were called to the area of 36 Street and Whitehorn Drive N.E., for reports of a collision.

At the time, a 2002 Nissan Altima, operated by a man in his 20s, was stopped against the south curb of Whitehorn Drive N.E., facing east, just prior to the bus stop, to let a passenger out of the vehicle.

At the same time, a Calgary Transit bus, operated by a man in his 60s, was turning eastbound onto Whitehorn Drive N.E., from southbound 36 Street N.E.

As the bus passed the Nissan and began to pull into the bus stop, the Nissan began to pull away from the curb. The Nissan and bus collided causing the Nissan to mount the curb and continue through the bus stop, striking a bench.

The Nissan continued onto the sidewalk and struck a 68-year-old woman and a two-year-old girl in a stroller.

The stroller and the child went under the Nissan before it came to a controlled stop on the front lawn of a nearby residence.

Passengers from the bus and other pedestrians lifted the Nissan off of the stroller to remove the child. The child was taken to hospital in serious, life-threatening condition, and is now stable and remains in hospital. The woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the Nissan was not injured and stayed at the scene.

The driver of the bus was treated on-scene for minor injuries.

No passengers on the bus were injured. 

The placement of where the Nissan stopped and the driver holding a Class 7 licence are believed to be factors in this collision.

Today, Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at approximately 2:40 a.m., we were called to the area of Stoney Trail N.E. and Harvest Hills Boulevard N.E. for reports of a collision.

At the time, it is believed a 2012 silver Ford Focus, operated by a 36-year-old man, was travelling eastbound on Stoney Trail N.E.

The vehicle began to veer off the roadway to the right, and struck one of three support beams supporting a road sign. The vehicle then began rotating before coming to rest on the shoulder of Stoney Trail N.E.

The driver suffered serious injuries as a result of the collision, and was transported to hospital.

A construction excavator was parked off the right shoulder of Stoney Trail N.E, close to the vehicle’s path of travel, but was not a factor in the collision.

Thanks to tips from the public, we have located the Dodge Ram pick-up truck believed to be involved in the incident. The driver is cooperating with police and the investigation is ongoing, charges have not been laid at this time.

We are now searching for the driver of an additional vehicle police believe was travelling behind the pick-up truck at the time of the incident. The driver may have witnessed or may have information related to the incident.

On Friday, June 23, 2023, at approximately 8:30 p.m., it is believed a blue Dodge Ram pick-up truck pulling a utility trailer was travelling east on Savanna Boulevard N.E.

At the same time, it is believed the victim was riding an e-scooter along Savanna Boulevard N.E., in the same direction as the pick-up truck when he was struck near the intersection of Savanna Gardens N.E.

The driver of the truck did not stop or remain at the scene.

At the time, Good Samaritans assisted the boy as he walked home, where EMS later arrived. The boy was transported to hospital in serious condition, since then, his condition has improved, and he is recovering at home.

Police are looking to speak the driver of a vehicle described as a black, four-door sedan, believed to be a Chrysler 200, as the driver may have important information to help further our investigation.

Today, Monday, July 3, 2023, at approximately 3 a.m., a half-ton pickup truck was travelling west on McKnight Boulevard near 84 Street N.E. The vehicle was occupied by the driver, an 18-year-old man, and a single passenger, a 19-year-old man.

Shortly after the truck passed 84 Street N.E., it is believed the passenger suddenly exited the truck through the passenger door while the truck was travelling, suffering serious injuries.

The driver of the truck stopped the vehicle and returned to the scene, where he and witnesses administered first aid to the passenger, who was later transported to hospital.

On Monday, June 12, 2023, at approximately 12:05 p.m., a 61-year-old woman was struck at the intersection of Fourth Street and Northmount Drive N.W.

At the time, it is believed a vehicle described as a light-coloured Jeep Wrangler was travelling southbound on Fourth Street N.W. and proceeded to make a right turn onto westbound Northmount Drive N.W.

At the same time, the victim is believed to have been walking in a marked crosswalk when she was struck.

The driver of the Jeep, a man in his 30s, exited his vehicle, walked up to the woman, and advised witnesses on scene he would call 9-1-1. He instead ran back to the vehicle and drove away.

The woman sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital.

We are now asking for the public’s help to identify the vehicle believed to be involved.

The vehicle is described as a light-coloured, newer model, two-door Jeep Wrangler, that may have a yellow or coloured stripe, is slightly lifted with large-sized tires. At the time of the incident, it is believed the Jeep’s doors were removed.

On the evenings of Friday, May 12, and Saturday, May 13, 2023, our officers were on-site at an area well-known for street racing near 76 Avenue and 68 Street S.E., to deter an increasing trend involving dangerous driving and to target vehicles speeding and racing which pose a hazard to drivers and other road users, including pedestrians.

Several resources from across the service, including HAWCS, the Traffic Section and patrol, were targeting drivers involved in street racing. Our officers set up roadblocks and barricades on select streets, were monitoring parking lots and traffic in the area, and identified many unsafe vehicles and hazardous driving offences. As a result, the following violations were issued:

·       90 tickets – including speeding, racing, driving and equipment violations

·       51 warnings – for various traffic offences

·       Seven compliance direction notices – directing drivers to correct safety issues with their vehicles

·       Two outstanding warrants

·       One Criminal Code charge of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle – for driving more than 100 km/hr over the speed limit

·       One racing charge with a 24-hour vehicle seizure

Street racing is illegal and can have severe consequences which can include injury or death.

“Calgary’s industrial areas may seem deserted on the weekends, but semi-trailers and other vehicles continue to travel on those roads around the clock. Pedestrian observers at these activities are also at heightened risk – as there are no safety measures in place and drivers are not professional. The potential for serious collisions as a result of illegal street racing activity is significant,” said Staff Sergeant Robert Patterson of the Calgary Police Service Traffic Section. “Any behaviour that causes a driver to act unpredictably or potentially lose control of a vehicle is very concerning. This includes racing, doughnuts, burnouts, drifting and other stunting activities.”

Earlier today, Thursday, April 6, 2023, at approximately 12:30 p.m., we responded to reports of a serious-injury collision at the intersection of Stoney Trail and Spruce Meadows Trail S.W.

It is believed an SUV, being driven by a man in his 40s, was travelling eastbound on Spruce Meadows Trail when the vehicle left the roadway and entered the centre median, ultimately striking a concrete bridge support.

The man, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was declared deceased on scene.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation. At this time, excessive speed and impairment are not believed to be factors.

We continue to investigate a collision that occurred this morning leaving a senior in life-threatening condition.

At approximately 7:40 a.m., today, Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2023, police were called for reports of a serious-injury collision that occurred at the intersection of 68 Street N.E. and 12 Avenue N.E.

At the time, it is believed the victim, a 69-year-old woman, used a marked crosswalk to cross 68 Street N.E., when a Mitsubishi Outlander, operated by a 62-year-old man, was travelling south on 68 Street N.E., and struck the woman.

The Mitsubishi came to a stop on the south side of the crosswalk and the driver remained at the scene.

The woman sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition.

Neither excessive speed or impairment are considered to be factors in this collision.

The driver failing to yield to the pedestrian in the crosswalk is considered a factor in this collision.

The speed on green initiative uses up to 55 of these ISC locations to capture vehicles that speed through green and yellow lights. Speeding fines reflect how fast you are travelling over the limit. Speeds in excess of 50 km/hr over the speed limit result in an appearance before a judge.

At approximately 4 a.m., on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2023, a collision occurred in the 1500 block of 36 Street S.E.

At the time, it is believed a four-door sedan was travelling south on 36 Street S.E., approaching 16 Avenue S.E. The sedan was occupied by the driver, a man in his 50s, and a passenger, a woman in her 30s.

The vehicle veered to the right side of the road and struck a parked and unoccupied SUV. The impact forced the SUV forward into a second parked and unoccupied vehicle. The sedan rotated approximately 90 degrees clockwise and came to a rest.

Neither of the occupants in the sedan were wearing seatbelts. As a result, the driver sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital. The passenger did not suffer injuries and was released at the scene.

Alcohol and drug use on the part of the driver are being investigated as potential factors in this collision. Although the street was snow-packed, it is not believed road conditions were a contributing factor.

It is believed a 2007 Ford truck was stationary in the far-right lane of eastbound Stoney Trail S.E., while waiting for a tow truck. At this time, a grey 2013 Volkswagen Jetta was travelling eastbound on Stoney Trail when the vehicle struck the rear of the stationary truck.

The Volkswagen caught fire which spread to the truck. The driver and the passenger of the truck, both men in their 40s, were not injured. The driver of the Volkswagen, a pregnant woman in her 20s, sadly lost her child following the collision.

Neither speed, nor alcohol or drugs are considered to be factors in this collision.

We continue to investigate a serious-injury collision that occurred early this morning in northeast Calgary.

Today, Friday, Nov. 25, 2022, at approximately 1:40 a.m., a two-vehicle serious-injury collision occurred at the intersection of Métis Trail and Airport Trail N.E.

At the time of the incident, it is believed a Chevrolet Express van, driven by a 39-year-old man, was travelling eastbound on Airport Trail towards the intersection. At the same time, a Hyundai Sonata, occupied by a 22-year-old man and a 33-year-old man, was travelling northbound on Métis Trail towards the intersection.

It is believed the Hyundai Sonata struck the passenger side of the Chevrolet Express van. As a result, the driver of the van was ejected through the passenger side of the vehicle and out onto the roadway. The Hyundai Sonata came to a rest on the shoulder of the left turn lanes of westbound Airport Trail.

The driver of the Chevrolet Express van suffered serious injuries and was transported to hospital where he remains. The occupants of the Hyundai Sonata suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

Speed, traffic signal violations and alcohol are being considered as factors in this collision.

On Thursday, Oct. 6, 2022, at approximately 2:15 p.m., we were called to the area of Country Hills Blvd. near Rockyspring Gate N.W., for reports of a single-vehicle collision.

It is believed that a GMC Sierra, operated by a man in his late 30s, was travelling west along Country Hills Blvd N.W., when the vehicle crossed the centre line into the eastbound lanes.

The vehicle exited off the roadway and travelled down a grassed embankment before striking a fence and a concrete block retaining wall which brought the vehicle to an abrupt stop.

The driver, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital.

On Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2022, at approximately 5:10 p.m., we were called to the area of 14 Street and North Haven Drive N.W., for reports of a collision involving a vehicle and a motorcycle.

At the time, it is believed a Kia Soul, operated by a woman in her late 20s, was travelling north on 14 Street N.W., approaching North Haven Drive N.W.  

At the same time, it is believed a man in his 40s operating a Yamaha motorcycle, was also travelling north in a separate lane beside the Kia on 14 Street N.W., approaching North Haven Drive N.W., at a high rate of speed.

The Kia changed lanes and struck the Yamaha. The impact caused the motorcycle to hit the curb and the rider became unseated from the motorcycle, collided with the cable barrier and tumbled along the grassy meridian for approximately 50 metres before coming to a rest.  

The motorcycle continued to travel separately from the rider on the grassy meridian for nearly 50 metres before it also came to a rest.

The motorcyclist suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital.

The driver of the Kia was not injured and remained on scene.

Excessive speed by the Yamaha and an unsafe lane change by the Kia appear to be factors in this collision.

On Monday, Oct. 3, 2022, at approximately 6:50 a.m., we responded to reports of a collision that occurred in the intersection of Barlow Trail and 76 Avenue S.E. 

It is believed a motorcycle was travelling in the right, northbound lane of Barlow Trail S.E., approaching the intersection at 76 Avenue S.E.

At the same time, an SUV was travelling south on Barlow Trail S.E., and as it turned left onto 76 Avenue S.E. to head east, it turned into the path of the motorcycle.

The motorcycle struck the front of the SUV. As a result, the operator of the motorcycle, a man in his late 20s, suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital.

The driver of the SUV, a male teen, was not injured and remained on scene.

Speed or alcohol are not considered to be factors in this collision.

As well as photo radar, there are 58 Intersection Safety Camera (ISC) locations throughout the city. These cameras can photograph vehicles entering the intersections during all phases of the signal, including red light infractions.

These cameras continue to reduce collisions and foster a safer driving environment at our intersections.

The speed on green initiative uses up to 55 of these ISC locations to capture vehicles that speed through green and yellow lights. Speeding fines reflect how fast you are travelling over the limit. Speeds in excess of 50 km/hr over the speed limit result in an appearance before a judge.

These drivers not only put themselves in danger, but they also endanger the lives of others.

Earlier this month, police laid charges against three motorcyclists for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

At approximately 8 p.m., on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2022, police observed a motorcycle travelling southbound on Edmonton Trail N.E. As the motorcyclist began to approach a red light at the intersection of 16 Avenue N.E., the motorcycle appeared to nearly hit the car ahead of it.

Police observed the motorcycle operating without a visible licence plate. Upon the driver noticing police, he fled the area by travelling between stopped vehicles and travelling at high speeds along 16 Avenue N.E., reaching an estimated 100km/h, in a 50 km/h zone.

The motorcyclist attempted to make a left turn onto First Street N.E., lost control and dropped his bike as a result of speeding. As police arrived, the driver attempted to flee but was subsequently arrested.

The driver did not have a Class 6 motorcycle licence, and only possessed a Class 5 licence for operating passenger vehicles.

As a result, Brandon Scott MARSHALL, 23, of Calgary, was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. He will next appear in court on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2022.

In another instance, police charged two men for similar behaviours.

On Saturday, Sept. 24, 2022, at approximately 10:50 p.m., police observed a group of motorcycles travelling south on Barlow Trail S.E., merging onto westbound Glenmore Trail S.E.

Upon noticing police, two motorcyclists from the group immediately accelerated and sped away. As the two drivers fled the area, they were both believed to be travelling at speeds reaching an estimated 200km/h, more than doubling the posted speed limit of 80 km/h.

Fortunately, HAWCS was in the area and was quickly able to monitor both motorcycles as they continued to speed throughout the city heading towards downtown.

The motorcyclists were then seen travelling north along Elbow Drive S.W., before eventually pulling into the parking lot of a gas station, located in the 500 block of 17 Avenue S.W.

Police in the downtown area were notified by HAWCS, and both drivers were subsequently arrested at the gas station.

One driver did not have a Class 6 motorcycle licence, and only possessed a Class 5 licence for operating passenger vehicles. The same driver was also unable to provide proof of insurance for his motorcycle, and as a result, the motorcycle was placed out-of-service and towed.

In relation to this incident, Jamal Mahmoud KHALED, 29, of Calgary, and Ahsan Moeez ALI, 24, of Calgary, are both charged with one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

KHALED and ALI will next appear in court on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2022.

“This type of dangerous behaviour on the roads cannot be tolerated. When motorcyclists drive recklessly on our streets, it puts everyone at risk. Just as with automobiles, not only are they putting themselves in danger, but also other road users including motorcyclists, drivers, and pedestrians,” says Staff Sergeant Robert Patterson of the Calgary Police Service Traffic Section. “We realize most motorcyclists are responsible, but want to remind those operating motorcycles to ensure they are driving safely, looking out for one another, and possess the proper license and training to operate a motorcycle.”

At approximately 2:15 a.m., on Friday, Oct. 1, 2021, a pedestrian was in the westbound lanes of 50 Avenue S.W., between 1 Street S.W. and Macleod Trail, when a light-colored pick-up truck travelling westbound along 50 Avenue struck him.

The truck then continued through the intersection of Macleod Trail, turned right and fled the area. The driver of the truck failed to return to the scene.

The pedestrian, a 35-year-old man, was discovered by a passing rideshare driver at around 2:35 a.m. He was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition and later died as a result of his injuries.

Later in October 2021, police arrested a man in relation to the hit-and-run, and seized a silver 2007 Dodge Ram that was believed to be involved in the incident.

As a result, police have now charged Marc BERGERON, 46, of Calgary, with one count each of hit-and-run and hit-and-run causing death.

At approximately 9:25 a.m., on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2022, we were called to the intersection of 36 Street and 17 Avenue S.E., for reports of a collision.

A Dodge Ram operated by a man in his 70s was travelling north on 36 Street S.E. The truck crossed the intersection at 17 Avenue S.E., then mounted the east curb. The truck continued moving along the curb, rubbing against the wall of a nearby business, before striking and damaging a bus shelter.

It is believed that as the truck struck the bus shelter, it also struck a man in his 40s, who sustained fatal injuries as a result of being hit.

The driver of the Dodge Ram sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital where he remains in stable condition.

Speed is considered to be a factor in the collision. A medical incident suffered by the driver of the Dodge Ram is also being investigated as a possible factor in the collision.

On Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2022, at approximately 1:10 p.m., we were called for reports of a collision near the area of Tsuut’ina Trail and 90 Avenue S.W.

Investigators have since determined that a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by a man in his 30s, was heading south along Tsuut’ina Trail approaching the overpass near 90 Avenue S.W. As the truck approached the overpass, it left the road and crossed into the grass and dirt median.

The truck continued moving forward and struck a bridge support column. As a result, the truck rotated and continued forward striking a second bridge support column before being deflected towards the roadway. The vehicle came to a stop at the edge of the median.

The truck sustained significant damage to the driver’s side, and sadly the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Speed, drugs and alcohol are not considered to be factors in this collision.
