At around 8:40am fire crews responded to the 100 block of Riverview Close SE for a structure fire. On approach, crews observed a large column of dark smoke and declared a working fire. Crews arrived at a two-story residential home with a front attached garage with heavy smoke and visible flames coming from the garage. Firefighters stretched multiple hose lines and began knocking down the fire from the driveway while other firefighters completed searches of the home and confirmed there was no one inside. The occupants had all self-exited and stated that they were alerted by a neighbour/passerby of the fire. There were no injuries reported.

A vehicle was inside the garage at the time and also on fire. Crews checked for extension into the roof of the garage and the majority of the fire damage was confined to the garage. A fan was set up to ventilate the rest of the home from smoke. Fire investigators attended the scene and have started their investigation into the origin and cause of the fire.

Emergency Health Services Alberta, Calgary Police Services, ATCO Gas and Enmax all attended the scene. Utilities to the home were isolated and a fire watch crew remains on scene.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation; however, the Calgary Fire Department would like to remind all Calgarians on some important safety tips around garages:

• Avoid clutter and storage of household waste such as old paints and aerosol cans. Routinely clean up and safely dispose of these items at an appropriate City of Calgary Facility in Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Program.

• Practice safe charging of any electrical batteries

• Never store propane inside

At around 9:25am on Thursday August 6, fire crews responded to 0-100 block of Covercreek Mews NE for a structure fire. Crews arrived at two story residential home with a front attached garage. Firefighters noticed smoke staining along the garage door and were met by occupants outside. Crews were shown inside the home and lead to the interior access door to the garage where crews found heavy smoke conditions. On entry to the garage, crews observed thick dark smoke but no visible flames. A fan was set up at the front door to ventilate. There was no fire damage inside the home. One occupant was assessed for smoke inhalation by Emergency Health Services Alberta. No other injuries were reported. A fire investigator attended the scene and removed three electric scooters and determined the fire originated from one of the scooters as all three were being charged.

At around 3:35am on Friday August 7, fire crews were dispatched to the 6600 block of 106 Avenue SE for a fire at a large commercial warehouse. Crews arrived and all staff had self-exited the building and the alarm system was active. Firefighters completed a size up and located a fire in an exterior compactor. A fire extinguisher was used to knock down the fire. A fire investigator attended and spoke with staff members who reported seeing a glow from the boxes immediately before the fire. They also reported having fires in the compactors due to lithium-ion batteries being inadvertently left in boxes going through the compactor. The fire investigator determined this was the most likely cause of this fire.

Shortly after, at around 3:50am, fire crews responded to the 0-100 block of Saddlemont Close NE for a structure fire. Crews arrived at a two-story residential home with smoke coming from a side basement door. All the occupants had self-exited and there were no injuries reported. Firefighters stretched a hose line to the basement and encountered low visibility due to the smoke and did a quick knock down the fire. A cat was rescued during the search in another part of the home and reunited with the owners on scene. The fire was contained to the basement suite. A fire investigator attended the scene and determined that the fire had originated from an electric scooter that had been plugged in.

The Calgary Fire Department would like to remind Calgarians to follow safe charging practices to reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires:

• Once a battery has charged to 100%, unplug the device to prevent overcharging the Lithium Battery
• Avoid leaving batteries unattended while charging
• Avoid charging batteries that show signs of damage, swelling, overheating, or physical deterioration
• Follow manufacturer charging instructions and use compatible charging equipment
• Learn how to safely dispose of batteries and keep them out of blue, black, or green carts

Wildfire, along with other outdoor fire types, have on average seen increased activity in Calgary since 2020, similar to other municipalities in western Canada. While Calgary is not adjacent to large boreal forests, its natural areas inevitably see fires and with increased densification and population growth in our City, more residents than ever are living near urban wildland areas, grasslands and other natural areas.

“Seasonal risk of wildfire, grass fires and other outdoor fires is a growing reality across Canada, especially where residential neighbourhoods join up with wildlands,” says Fire Chief Steve Dongworth.

“While The City of Calgary provides some of Canada’s most effective fire response, planning and emergency preparedness, we also rely on residents and communities to reduce our shared fire risk, both at home and in City parks and natural areas. Hotter, dryer summers mean that we all play a role in keeping our homes and communities safe.”

In response to this shared risk, the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) has developed Calgary’s first dedicated wildfire resilience and prevention campaign, which runs August 3 to September 6 and is supported through funding from the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta (FRIAA) FireSmart Program. Wildfire awareness campaigns are now common in rural and forested areas of Canada, often through provincial and federal FireSmart programs, and are increasingly common in municipalities across Canada.

Like any municipality, Calgary has unique topography and natural areas with a number of “wildland-urban interfaces” where residential development is adjacent to natural vegetation. These areas are detailed in maps at calgary.ca/wildfire where Calgarians can determine their proximity to our City’s major natural and wildland areas, including a community-specific map.

Wildland-urban interface areas exist across Calgary, and they can be found in both established and growing communities. Living in these areas increases exposure to wildfire risk, especially during hot, dry, and windy conditions that are currently being observed across southern Alberta and British Columbia. On July 30, CFD issued a fire advisory for Calgary, asking Calgarians to use extra caution when using open flames or any solid-fueled appliance such as fire pits, barbeques and campfires. 

“If nature is next door, wildfire is a risk. Learn about outdoor fire risk specific to where you live – and then take any number of our recommended big and small actions that will make a difference to reduce wildfire, grass and bush fire risk in and around your home and community,” says Chief Dongworth.

Reflecting on his own experience touring the aftermath of the deadly Los Angeles fires in 2025, Chief Dongworth says a little goes a long way in terms of adapting to warming summers and emergency preparedness.

“Becoming more resilient in the face of increasing wildfire risk is a multi-year process,” he says. “We don’t expect everyone to replace their roofing and siding however there is a lot that Calgarians can do today, whether  you rent or own your home – or while visiting our City’s parks and natural areas.”

Calgary Fire has specialized equipment to combat wildland fires, and trains regularly to be ready for major incidents. CFD and other City business units also collaborate with wildland-adjacent communities like Discovery Ridge to identify risks and opportunities related to potential wildfire activity. The City is also developing a wildfire threat assessment program to better understand wildfire conditions in natural areas across Calgary.

“Discovery Ridge is a community where we need to balance the beauty of the natural landscape with the risk of wildfires,” says Dana Fleury, Vice President, Discovery Ridge Community Association.

“We encourage our community members here and in other areas of Calgary to learn more about how we can all mitigate the risk of wildfire in our city while preserving our environment.”

Calgarians are asked to:

1. Create a safe perimeter around your home and property. Take steps to remove combustibles. Limit the amount of flammable vegetation in any potential ignition zone close to your residence.

2. Manage fuels and flammable materials. Store propane tanks, firewood and yard waste away from your home. Do not store propane tanks inside.

3. Upgrade when renovating. Choose ignition resistant building materials and construction techniques.

4. Practice outdoor fire safety everywhere. Improper disposal of smoking materials remains one of Calgary’s leading causes of outdoor fires. Extreme caution should be used in the city’s natural areas and green spaces during fire bans and periods of high temperatures.  

5. Prepare and know what to do. Learn how to become more resilient during periods of wildfire smoke and maintain an emergency kit with wildfire-specific items such as N95 masks. Always call 9-1-1 in an emergency.

Calgary Fire Department – wildland fire fast facts

• Wildfire in Calgary, along with other outdoor fire types, have on average seen increased activity in Calgary since 2020, similar to other municipalities in western Canada.

• Calgary Fire has responded to an average of 23 wildland fires (wildfire, grass and brush fires) per month annually since 2016. Peak activity usually occurs in May, which on average sees an average of 42 wildland fires.

• Seasonal conditions continue to be variable despite long-term trends. From January to June 2026, for example, wildland fires in Calgary declined by 17 per cent, primarily due to fewer brush, or brush and grass mixture fires, compared to the same period in 2025. This was strongly influenced by persistent cold temperatures and heavy snow accumulation during January to April 2026, which reduced several ignition risk factors, including construction activity, outdoor smoking near entrances and balconies, and the use of outdoor heating or open-flame devices.

• While spring 2026 wildland fires decreased in frequency compared to Calgary’s historical average due to wet conditions, it is expected that outdoor fire activity will continue to trend upwards this summer and increase, on average, in the coming years.

• As of July 2026, Calgary Fire had responded to more wildland fire incidents in the first half of 2026 than recorded for entire individual years between 2017 to 2020.

  

Multiple CFD crews were dispatched to the scene following reports of a serious collision. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered two of the three vehicles fully engulfed in flames. Crews immediately initiated an aggressive fire attack while simultaneously conducting rapid searches of the involved vehicles and providing emergency care to those who could be reached.

Once the fire was brought under control, firefighters continued to work in coordination with Alberta Emergency Health Services (EHS) to assess and treat those involved. Despite the rapid actions of first responders, four people were pronounced deceased at the scene. Four additional patients were transported to hospital by EHS for further assessment and treatment.

The Calgary Fire Department extends its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of those who lost their lives, and our thoughts are with those who were injured and everyone affected by this tragic incident.

Following the completion of firefighting and rescue operations, the scene was turned over to the Calgary Police Service, which is leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.

The Calgary Fire Department urges all motorists to drive attentively, obey posted speed limits, avoid distractions, and always wear a seatbelt. Safe driving practices remain one of the most effective ways to prevent serious and fatal collisions.

Despite responding to three major fires over the course of less than three hours, the Calgary Fire Department maintained emergency response capabilities across the city through coordinated resource deployment and support from crews at multiple stations. 

The causes of all three fires remain under investigation by the Calgary Fire Department Fire Investigation Team. Damage estimates are not available at this time. 

The Calgary Fire Department extends its appreciation to the Calgary Police Service, Alberta Emergency Health Services, the Calgary Emergency Management Agency, City of Calgary partners, and landfill personnel for their collaboration and support during these incidents. 

Early detection played a critical role in protecting lives and property during today's events. The Calgary Fire Department reminds all residents to ensure smoke alarms are installed on every level of their home, outside all sleeping areas, and are tested monthly to ensure they are functioning properly. 

With current hot, dry, and windy conditions increasing the risk of fire across southern Alberta, residents are also encouraged to use extra caution with any outdoor activities that could create a fire and to report fires immediately by calling 9-1-1.

The fire was quickly brought under control and extinguished by crews on scene and the injured people were assessed and transported by EHS ambulances.  The Calgary Police Service were quickly on scene and worked with crews to assess the cause of the fire.  At this time the incident has been turned over to CPS for further investigation.  Nine fire apparatus and over 20 firefighters were on scene. 

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Crews arrived and an adult male victim was located face down in the water and attached to his paddleboard leash near the bridge abutment. The patient’s location was shared with responding boat crews and Calgary Police Service HAWKS was requested to provide aerial support.

CFD’s aquatic rescue boat arrived from downstream, reached the victim, who was brought to shore while crews performed CPR. Once on shore, CPR continued until the patient was transferred to Emergency Health Services-Alberta. Crews assisted with ongoing CPR before the patient was transported to Foothills Medical Centre in critical condition.

There was initial uncertainty about whether there was a second individual involved in the incident and CFD crews worked to confirm that all people had been accounted for. The second individual was identified as the 11-year-old son of the patient, who had floated downriver following the collision with the bridge abutment and was brought to shore by a bystander. EMS assessed the child and did not have any medical concerns.

"The patient did have a personal floatation device on, but with the power of the river and the current itself, the person was pulled under the water and was attached to the paddleboard by an ankle leash,” said Battalion Chief Bruce Barrs.

Standup paddleboards are increasingly popular on Calgary’s waterways and are trending within this year’s aquatic rescue incidents, including three paddleboarders rescued on the Bow River during the June 2026 high water event and river safety advisory.

The Calgary Fire Department reminds Calgarians that paddleboard ankle leashes are not safe for use on moving water. Paddleboard leash usage has resulted in at least two aquatic fatalities and other serious incidents in recent years. Please remember:

• There is a high risk of being pulled under water or getting the leash entangled, which can trap someone under water as the force of the river may make it impossible to detach the leash during an emergency.
• Do not use the ankle leash while paddleboarding on the river. If you’re worried about losing your board if you fall off, consider putting your phone number on the board. Using anchors on moving water poses a similar risk.

At around 3:30pm, fire crews responded to the 1700 block of 26 Avenue SW for a structure fire. Crews arrived at a low-rise residential complex with smoke showing and called a working fire. Firefighters saw smoke throughout the top floor and assisted residents with exiting the building, along with their pets, while continuing to search for the fire. Two ladder trucks were set up to access the roof, and additional fire engines were called to attend the scene. Fire was located in the walls and ceiling of the top floor of the building and was extending through void spaces. Firefighters checked for extension of fire from both the roof top and interior ceiling and confirmed the fire is extinguished. A total of five people, from two different units, will be displaced as their units have extensive damage. No injuries were reported and all pets are accounted for.

A fire investigator is on scene and has started the investigation into the origin and cause of the fire.

Calgary Police Services, Emergency Health Services Alberta, ATCO and Enmax all attended the scene.

The Calgary Fire Department would like to remind all Calgarians that:

• Working smoke alarms save lives

  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of your home, including the basement.

  • Test all smoke alarms, including 10-year lithium-ion battery powered alarms, at least once a month by pushing the test button and replace batteries at least once per year.

  • Replace smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or don’t respond when tested.

• Practice safe charging

  • Once a battery has charged to 100%, unplug the device. Don’t overcharge the Lithium Battery.
  • Don’t charge a device under your pillow, on your bed or on a couch. Place the device on a hard surface to allow airflow around the device.
  • Don’t charge your batteries overnight.

Patient care was transferred to EHS-AB paramedics and firefighters continued to assist with resuscitation efforts as the child was in critical and life-threatening condition. It is estimated that the child may have been in under water for around 20 minutes. STARS ambulance was called to attend and CFD cleared a landing zone however, sadly, the child was pronounced deceased on scene and not transported.

CFD Aquatic rescuers completed a surface and sonar search of the pond and confirmed that there were no other patients in the water.

Flow rates on both the Bow and Elbow rivers have decreased to below advisory levels. While there may still be some reduced visibility and debris, conditions are expected to gradually improve to typical summer conditions however, and the water temperature remains cold. The public can resume normal activities on and around our City’s rivers but are encouraged to continue to use caution and practice safety.

Calgary’s rivers are closely monitored by several City departments. During the annual runoff season, melting snow and floating debris can create dangerous conditions for people on the river, prompting these types of advisories.  

A lifted advisory does not remove the need for caution on Calgary’s waterways. Conditions are unpredictable and can change without warning, such as when we experience sudden thunderstorms that result in rapid, short duration increases in flow. 

The Calgary Fire Department Aquatic Rescue Team will continue to monitor and patrol Calgary’s waterways. As always, Calgarians are reminded to use caution and plan ahead to be prepared for anything on the water.

Calgary Fire Department reminds all Calgarians and their guests to:

• Actively supervise any children and stay within arm's reach of any young children in the water

• Select the proper watercraft for the waterway and have a boat safety kit

• Avoid tying watercrafts together while on the river

• Avoid wearing ankle leashes while on the river

• All watercraft users must wear their own properly fitting lifejackets

At around 5:05 pm fire crews responded to a structure fire in the 0-100 block of Sunmount Close SE. Fire crews arrived to find a fire at the back of a two storey residential house. Firefighters stretched hose lines from the alley into the back yard and started knocking back the fire when they discovered the gas line was damaged and further fueling the fire. Firefighters used a fog pattern to hold back the fire while they attempted to clamp the gas line. A clamp was applied which reduced the gas flow and ATCO gas attended to fully clamp and repair the gas line. No occupants were inside at the time of the incident, and the fire damage was limited to the exterior of the home.

At around the same time fire crews were dispatched to a second house fire across the alley in the 0-100 block of Sunvalley Drive SE. Fire crews saw smoke coming from a second story window as two occupants self-exited from the home. Firefighters stretched a hose line into the home and knocked down a fire in a second-floor bedroom. Crews checked for extension and found fire in the walls and attic space. A ladder tower was set up to access the roof and upper exterior of the home. The fire was extinguished and a fire watch crew remains on scene.

ATCO gas, Enmax, Emergency Health Services-Alberta all attended the scene. No injuries were reported.

Neighbours reported hearing extremely loud thunder and a bright flash immediately before the fires. Two fire investigators attended the scenes.

At around 11:55am fire crews responded to the Bow River in an area downstream of Edworthy park for a water rescue. The first arriving fire crew located three people in the water holding onto a cluster of trees. Two Fire Department aquatic rescue jet boats were deployed and able to safely get the three people, one adult and two youths back to shore. Aquatic rescuers were also able to recover their paddleboards and personal belongings. While all three people were wearing lifejackets and were not injured, this was a close call incident, and the current conditions are not suitable for recreational activities.

The flow rate of the Bow River has increased to over 500 cubic meters per second, which is almost double the threshold for when a river safety advisory is issued. The very fast flow rate, along with debris in the water and other hidden hazards beneath the surface make it very challenging to paddle. This increases the risk of getting pushed into hazards such as trees and bridge pillars and being pinned by the rush of cold water.

The Calgary Fire Department would like to remind all Calgarians and any visitors to Calgary to:

1. Reschedule any recreational activities on Bow and Elbow Rivers until the advisory is lifted.
2. Cyclists and pedestrians should watch for low-lying areas where the river can submerge the pathways.
3. Please help us share these safety messages with your friends and family

With continued rainfall and rising waters levels, the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) advises against boating and all other water activities on the Bow and Elbow Rivers, effective immediately. 

The Bow and Elbow Rivers have exceeded safe recommended flow rates for boating, floating or swimming, and it is expected these levels will sustain through Canada Day and potentially into the end of the week. 

While The City’s Environmental Risk and Resilience team has advised that widespread overbank flooding is not anticipated, localized flooding remains possible, and high flow rates may continue, making conditions on and near the river dangerous.  

Water temperature remains cold and with the higher flow rates water turbidity is increased, making hazards difficult to see. Strong winds have also increased the number of debris, such as trees and branches in the rivers. The higher speed of the water increases the risks of being swept away for anyone that falls into the water, and there is a higher risk of being pinned against obstacles such as bridge pillars. 

“While the school year has ended and everyone is excited for summer, the Calgary Fire Department advises everyone to stay off the Bow and the Elbow Rivers, until safer conditions return and the river safety advisory is lifted,” says Alex Kwan, CFD’s Public Information Officer.  

“We know that Calgarians love their rivers, and as we head into the Stampede, we welcome lots of visitors, so we want to remind everyone that when our waterways flow this high and fast, there’s significant risk, regardless of your watercraft or skill level. Those walking near our City’s rivers, including people with pets, should be careful as well.”

Along with turbidity and debris, conditions for a CFD River usage advisory include Bow River flow rates exceeding 280 cubic meters per second and flow rates in Elbow River exceeding 50 cubic meters per second.

Calgary Fire and its Aquatics Team will continue to monitor Calgary’s waterways while the advisory is in place and will notify Calgarians when the advisory is lifted.

It is important for Calgarians near the river to be careful due to high flow levels. Calgarians are urged to: 

1. Reschedule any recreational activities on Bow and Elbow Rivers until the advisory is lifted. 

2. Warn their children about the dangers of fast-moving water, particularly those residents who live near the rivers. 

3. Cyclists and pedestrians should watch for low-lying areas where the river can submerge the pathways. 

4. Keep pets away from fast-moving water.

Partners in Aquatic Safety is a collaborative effort across The City’s emergency rescue, enforcement and recreation business units. The group officially launched the water recreation season today with a strong message emphasizing the importance of being cautious and prepared when venturing onto Calgary’s waterways.

With more Calgarians than ever expected to be enjoying our City’s lakes and rivers, the Calgary Fire Department emphasized that “where there’s water, there’s risk,” and that good safety practices can prevent trouble not only on fast-moving water like the Bow River, but also on calm waters like community lakes.

“Our City’s waterways are wild places that are seeing a growing number of preventable incidents,” says Alex Kwan, Calgary Fire Department Public Information Officer. “Last week, Calgary Fire rescued seven indviduals who became pinned on a bridge abutment on the Bow River, including one person who was pulled from the water.”

“Water incidents, including drownings, can happen very quickly yet are avoidable if you follow simple guidelines, such as knowing your route, current river conditions and ensuring that your plan and boating equipment is appropriate to conditions and the skill level of your group,” says Kwan. “And on all lakes and rivers, lifejackets and proper supervision are critical for children and inexperienced swimmers.”

Throughout the summer, Calgary Fire Department’s aquatic crews patrol the Bow and Elbow rivers and respond to incidents on all bodies of water within Calgary. Law enforcement officials from CPS and CCS will also patrol Calgary’s waterways, pathways and riverbanks to enforce municipal bylaws and provincial statutes.

“If you’re on a boat, you need to wear a life jacket,” says Staff Sgt. Andy Woodward, with the CPS Traffic Unit. “If you’re steering that boat, you need to wear a life jacket and you need to be sober. Being impaired by drugs or alcohol while operating a boat is no different than being impaired by drugs or alcohol while driving a car.  It’s dangerous, and it’s illegal.”

Calgarians are reminded that not wearing a life jacket or personal flotation device (PFD) on Calgary’s waterways can result in a fine up to $500 and a mandatory court appearance.

“Wearing a lifejacket or personal flotation device is not just a choice; it’s the law,” says Inspector Susan Wall, City of Calgary Community Safety. “Bylaw and CPS officers are dedicated to enforcing water safety bylaws, so let’s protect ourselves and avoid fines while enjoying Calgary rivers and lakes.”

In addition to practicing water safety and following water safety bylaws, Calgarians are reminded of the importance of swimming lessons and encouraged to build their knowledge of staying safe around the water.

“Learning to swim is one of the most important steps Calgarians can take to stay safe around the water,” explains Team Lead of Thornhill Aquatic & Recreation Centre, Kadyn Morris. “Too often, incidents happen when people don’t expect them. Knowing how to swim and how to stay calm can save your life. It’s never too late to start. No matter your age or experience, everyone deserves to feel confident in the water.”

To help more Calgarians build these life-saving skills, The City of Calgary is offering free-swimming lessons on June 25 at Thornhill Aquatic & Recreation Centre, Sir Winston Churchill Aquatic & Recreation Centre, Acadia Aquatic & Fitness Centre and Bob Bahan Aquatic & Fitness Centre.

These free lessons are a part of a global initiative called “The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson” focused on water safety education and drowning prevention. “We’re proud to be part of this global effort,” adds Morris. “It’s an opportunity for Calgarians of all ages to take that first step. Register, learn the skills and help keep yourself and others safe.”

And finally, when calling 9-1-1 in a water emergency, knowing your location is critical. You may not know exactly where you are, but sharing what you can see around you - such as outfall numbers along shorelines, pathway markers, nearby addresses, bridge names, or other landmarks - can help 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Officers pinpoint your location and dispatch emergency crews quickly.

“One of the most important things people can do in a water emergency is to call 9-1-1 immediately and provide as much location information as possible,” says Dan Heyde, Deputy Chief of Operations, Calgary 9-1-1. “If you see someone in distress, don't hesitate to call for help.”

• Current incident tracking and modelling from the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) project a potential all-time peak in water rescues for 2026.
• The greatest number of water rescues occur in July, averaging 50 rescues that month since 2016.
• Geographically, Calgary Fire sees the greatest number of water rescues on the Bow River between the Shouldice Boat Ramp downstream to Harvie Passage. The communities of Montgomery and Inglewood, at either end of this float, see the greatest number of aquatic rescues in the waters adjacent to their communities.
• Lakes and ponds across Calgary also see notable aquatic rescue incidents, including popular locations around the Glenmore Reservoir, community lakes and smaller bodies of water, including the Saddle Ridge storm water pond.
• In 2024, the second greatest number of rescues were recorded at Harvie Passage since 2016, a popular white-water destination that requires appropriate water craft, skill and water safety equipment. These incidents are considered serious, considering the flow and difficulty of the Bow River in that area.
• Calgary Fire has recorded seven aquatic rescue incidents involving paddleboards and individuals falling off them. One of these incidents involved a person being tied to a paddleboard and subsequently dragged downriver.
• Calgary Fire has attended a total of 30 fatalities related to aquatic rescue calls since 2016, including five in 2017 and four in 2021. Last year, in 2025, three Calgarians drowned and 2026 has already seen one drowning fatality.

“As first responders, it is important for us to stay connected with the community and the people we serve. This program allows us to recognize the value and experience of older adults in Calgary, while celebrating their lives and achievements with them,” said Calgary Fire Chief, Steve Dongworth.  

“We have already visited several Calgarians who turned 100+ years old and had great conversations with the celebrants and their guests. I hope this program allows us to visit more Calgarians who are celebrating a big birthday and show them our appreciation”.

At around 6:20 am fire crews responded to the 60 block of Peacekeepers DR SW for a structure fire. As crews arrived at a commercial warehouse yard, they were met by workers on site, who led them to a portable washroom unit next to a large warehouse. There was moderate smoke showing and they located a fire in between the unit and warehouse.

Fire crews stretched hose lines and began protecting the main warehouse. Firefighters knocked back the fire, which appears to have originated from the smaller washroom unit. Crews ventilated smoke from the main warehouse and are rotating crews on scene to knock down hot spots in the walls of the portable washroom unit. No injuries were reported and utilities to the unit has been isolated.

A fire investigator attended the scene and is working to determine the cause of the fire. Firefighters are working with the business to move the trailer unit away from the building as smouldering fires and hot spots continue to re-ignite within the walls of the washroom unit. Fire crews will remain on scene until the fire is confirmed to be extinguished.

A number of fire trucks left the scene at shift change and returned to scene with new crews, making it seem that more fire trucks responded to this incident when the response was a first alarm response to an industrial warehouse.

At around 4:20 pm, fire crews responded to the 1000 block of 13 AV SW for a high-rise structure fire. Crews arrived at visible flames and heavy smoke from the top of a 15-story residential building. Firefighters began evacuating residents and located a fire in the ceiling area of a top floor apartment unit and roof top area. 

Crews conducted an internal fire attack while other firefighters evacuated nearby units. A ladder truck was set up to access balconies and units from the exterior, but no one needed to be evacuated using the ladder truck. The building is reported to have 75 units; the majority of residents were evacuated while some residents were sheltered in place in unaffected areas. One person was transported with minor injuries sustained during the evacuation; one firefighter was assessed for minor injuries sustained during routine on scene activities. No other injuries reported.

Fire investigators are on scene and have begun an investigation. A fire watch crew will be rotating throughout the evening and night. All residents, with the exception of two top floor units, have been able to re-occupy the building and reunite with their pets that were sheltered in place during the incident. 

Calgary Police Services, Alta Paramedic Health, Enmax and ATCO Gas all supported on scene.

With continued snowmelt and rising waters, the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) advises against boating and all other water activities on the Bow and Elbow Rivers, effective immediately. 

The Bow River has exceeded safe recommended flow rates for boating, floating or swimming and it expected that the Elbow River will continue to rise over the weekend with an incoming rain event.  

While The City’s Environmental Risk and Resilience team has advised that widespread overbank flooding is not anticipated, localized flooding remains possible and high flow rates may continue, making conditions on and near the river dangerous. 

Pathways near the river may continue to be affected. Water temperature remains cold and with the higher flow rates water turbidity is increased, making hazards difficult to see. 

“For the safety of river users and emergency responders, the Calgary Fire Department advises everyone to stay off the Bow and the Elbow Rivers until safer conditions return and the boating advisory is lifted,” says Alex Kwan, CFD’s Public Information Officer. 

“We know that Calgarians love their rivers, yet we also know that when our waterways flow this high and fast, there’s significant risk to anyone, regardless of your watercraft or skill level. Those walking near our City’s rivers, including people with pets, should exercise caution as well.” 

Along with turbidity and debris, conditions for a Calgary Fire Department boating advisory include Bow River flow rates exceeding 280 cubic metres per second above the Elbow River confluence. Calgary Fire and its Aquatics Team will continue to monitor Calgary’s waterways while the advisory is in place and will notify Calgarians when the boating advisory is removed. 

It is important for Calgarians near the river to be careful due to high flow levels. Calgarians are urged to: 

-Exercise caution around riverbanks as fast-moving water can cause erosion and destabilization. 
-Warn their children about the dangers of fast-moving water, particularly those residents who live near the rivers. 
-Cyclists and pedestrians should watch for low-lying areas where the river can submerge the pathways. 
-Keep pets away from fast moving water.

At around 12:15 am fire crews responded to the 100 block of Sherwood Crescent NW for a structure fire. Crews arrived at heavy flames and smoke coming for the rear of a two-story residential home with front attached garage. Firefighters stretched high volume fire hoses between the homes and began knocking back the fire. Crews also set up high-flow ground monitors to contain the fire and limit spread to other homes. The fire had extended up the backside of the home and into the roof.  A ladder truck was set up to help protect neighbouring homes and access the roof. A fire crew made entry into the home with a hose line to extinguish hot spots in the ceiling of the second floor while other crews completed searches to confirm all occupants were out.

Wind gust of over 40km/hr were reported and firefighters noted the wind shifted during this incident however crews were able to limit the spread of the fire and the response was kept at a first alarm response.

A total of 17 occupants had self-exited from three homes and no injuries were reported. The exterior of two neighbouring homes sustained damaged to the exterior, but all occupants were able to reoccupy. Seven people have been displaced from the source home.

A fire investigator attended the scene and fire watch crews rotated throughout the morning to ensure no reignition.

While the cause of this fire is still under investigation, improper disposal of smoking materials continues to be the leading cause of outdoor fires in Calgary. To help reduce outdoor fire risks, Calgarians should make an effort to properly dispose of smoking materials.

It is recommended to:

• Never put out cigarettes or smoking material in flower planters, peat moss, your lawn or garden.
• Use a deep, wide, sturdy metal container with a lid, filled part way with sand or water that should be emptied regularly.
• Ensure all butts and ash are out by soaking them with water prior to putting in the trash.
• Never discard your butts by throwing them off of your balcony, or out of your vehicle window.

Calgary firefighters respond to a variety of calls, including fires, emergency medical incidents, motor vehicle collisions, and other emergencies. They also are very present in the community and can be seen at many public events, building community connections and promoting fire safety. As part of their career development, firefighters can specialize in technical rescue, aquatic rescue and hazardous materials. 

The CFD anticipates hiring 120-150 probationary firefighters from this posting. 

Last year, the Calgary Fire Department received over 2700 recruit applications while graduating 119 new probationary firefighters. With nearly 1700 firefighters on staff by the end of 2026, CFD expects to grow significantly during the next four years to keep up with one of Canada’s fastest-growing municipalities.  

In 1999, CFD became the first Canadian fire service to receive accreditation status with the Commission on Fire Accreditation International, making them part of one per cent of fire agencies in North America to have achieved this status so far.

The residents of the house were alerted to the fire by one of the occupants and all evacuated.  Four occupants were assessed by EHS paramedics for injuries with one of these being transported to hospital with minor burns and smoke inhalation.  Fire crews rescued numerous pets from the structure.  Unfortunately, one dog and two cats died as a result of the fire.  Three other dogs and two cats were rescued alive and survived.   

Enmax and ATCO assisted at the scene with ensuring that the power and gas utilities were made safe for responders and the public.

A Calgary Fire Department Fire Investigator attended the scene to determine the exact origin and cause of this fire and fire crews remained at the scene overnight to ensure full extinguishment.

Working smoke alarms save lives and can reduce your risk of dying in a house fire. For more information on smoke alarms and general fire safety and fire prevention, please visit calgary.ca/fire. In a typical home fire, you may have as little as two minutes to escape from the time the smoke alarm sounds. 

These three important actions will help make sure your smoke alarms are an effective first line of defence:

· Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of your home, including the basement.

· Test all smoke alarms, including 10-year lithium-ion battery powered alarms, at least once a month by pushing the test button and replace batteries at least once per year.

· Replace smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or don’t respond when tested.

Upon arrival, crews observed smoke coming from windows on the main floor, and a working fire was declared. Firefighters initiated an interior fire attack, deploying multiple hose lines to bring the situation under control.

A thorough search of the residence was conducted, and no occupants or pets were located. The structure is currently under redevelopment.

CFD crews remain on scene and are actively engaged in firefighting operations at this time. There have been no injuries reported.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Due to ongoing firefighting activities, traffic disruptions are expected in the area, particularly along 14 Street NW and 23 Avenue NW. The public is advised to avoid the area if possible.

The Calgary Fire Department Aquatic Rescue Team arrived, and rescuers entered the water to begin searching the last scene point. Crews reported poor visibility and cold temperatures conditions. A rescue boat was launched, and multiple rescuers conducted a systematic surface search dive while Calgary Police Services (CPS) worked with lake staff to review security camera footage and CPS' Helicopter Air Watch for Community Safety (HAWCS) provided additional aerial view support. The additional information allowed rescuers to focus the search area, and the youth was pulled from the water by rescuers from a depth of just over 6m (20 feet). Rescuers assisted with moving the patient to a waiting Emergency Health Services Alberta ambulance (EHS-AB) and two firefighters assisted with patient care at the patient was transported to hospital.

Calgary Fire Department would like to thank our partners at Calgary Police Services and Emergency Health Services Alberta, along with staff at the lake and witnesses, for their assistance. Their efforts and collaboration were instrumental in locating the youth.

At around 9:10am fire crews responded to the 300 block of 6 AV SE for falling glass from a high rise building. Crews arrived and were met by security staff from the building. 

An area of sidewalk was taped off where there was broken glass on the sidewalk. A pane of glass from a sixth-floor window was broken, with a portion of the glass still in the sill. A perimeter was set up, and people were directed to other sidewalks. The Technical Rescue team and a ladder tower truck were called in to access and remove the remaining glass.

A ladder tower truck was set up on 3 ST SE, closing off southbound traffic and reducing northbound traffic to a single lane. Firefighters safely removed the remaining pieces of glass and conducted a basic assessment and confirmed that only one window was damaged. The window had two layers of glass and only the exterior window was broken. The cause of the damage is unknown, and no other windows appeared damaged or at risk of falling out. Crews have cleared from the scene and responsibility turned back over to the building owners.

At around 11:20am fire crews responded to the 0-100 block of Mahogany Square SE for a structure fire. Crews arrived to a two-story residential home with heavy smoke and visible flames and declared a working fire. Wind gusts were reported to be over 80km/hr and a second alarm was called due to risks of fire rapidly spreading to neighbouring homes.

Firefighters stretched multiple hand lines and began applying water to knock back the fire while ladder trucks prepared to set up water towers. Multiple fire crews were assigned to limit spread of the fire, evacuate and search neighbouring homes for occupants. There was no one home in the source home and no reports of any injuries. Two water towers were set up and used in combination with hose lines to extinguish the fire that had burned through the roof of the source home. Due to the quick actions of firefighters on scene, the fire damage was contained to the source home, and the neighbouring homes were all able to re-occupy.

Calgary Police assisted with traffic control as streets were closed off due to large hose lines connecting multiple fire hydrants to different fire trucks. Emergency Health Services Alberta, ATCO gas and Enmax all attended the scene. Utilities were shut off to the source home.

A fire watch crew is on scene to ensure the fire does not re-ignite. A fire investigator is on scene and continuing their investigation into the origin and cause of the fire.

Calgary Fire responds to severe weather events every year. Calgary Fire’s operations and technical teams are prepared and will continue responding to any life hazard incidents.

On Thursday April 9, at around 3:50pm fire crews responded to a garage fire in the community of Kingsland. Firefighters arrived at heavy smoke conditions and visible flames coming from a detached garage. A neighbour reported smelling smoke and acted quickly to alert the occupants of the residential home and get them to self-exit. Crews stretched two hose lines and began knocking down the fire. A portable car port structure was in front of the garage doors, in addition to a large recreational trailer, which limited access for firefighters and equipment. Numerous contents were being stored within the garage and under the car port which required firefighters to cut sections of the back wall of the garage for better access to extinguish the fire. The fire damaged several roof trusses in the garage. No injuries were reported and the fire was extinguished before spreading to any other structures. A fire investigator was on scene and worked in conjunction with fire crews as they completed overhaul to ensure the fire was extinguished.

In the early morning of Friday April 10, at around 5:30am fire crews responded to a garage fire in the community of Hawkwood. Fire crews arrived at a corner lot home with visible flames and smoke coming from the side attached garage of a two-story residential home. The occupants had self-exited the home and reported hearing their smoke alarms and finding a fire inside the garage which led to their evacuation. Two pick-up trucks parked on the driveway were also on fire. Fire crews stretched hose lines and began applying water to the vehicles and through the main garage opening. ATCO and Enmax attended the scene and shut off utilities to the home. The fire was contained to the garage and did not spread into the rest of the home. Fire crews have been rotating on fire watch throughout the day as fire investigators are investigating the cause of the fire.

Calgary Police assisted with traffic control at all incidents and Emergency Health Services-Alberta attended to assess occupants and provide medical standby for fire crews.

While the causes of these fires are still under investigation, they all originated inside the garages and the Calgary Fire Department would like to remind everyone:

• Practice safe charging by avoiding charging battery powered items overnight and set a reminder to check on any items to avoid overcharging
• Unplug any unused electrical equipment or appliances when not in use
• Limit storage of unused hazardous household materials and drop off at appropriate locations

At around 3:40pm fire crews responded to a structure fire in the 3400 block of 56 AV SE. Crews arrived at a large area commercial warehouse and were met by workers that had all self-exited the building. Workers reported a fire in a storage room and had attempted to use dry chemical extinguishers but when unsuccessful, all workers self-exited from the building. No injuries were reported and all workers are accounted for.

Fire crews stretched multiple hose lines inside to begin knocking down the fire. Firefighters reported heavy smoke conditions, making it very difficult to see and locate the source of the fire. A large area fan was brought to scene to assist with smoke removal as crews rotated through fire attack teams. Low visibility, type and location of the contents on fire made it difficult to apply water directly to the source of the fire resulting in crews remaining on scene for several hours. 

ATCO Gas, Enmax, Calgary Police Service & Emergency Health Services-Alberta ambulance all supported on scene. Gas to the building was shut off as a precaution and an ambulance crew was kept on scene to support fire crews. Workers from the warehouse assisted fire crews with building access, layout and heavy equipment.

 A fire investigator attended the scene but was unable to begin their investigation due to the low visibility conditions and will return when the fire is completely extinguished.

A third alarm was called for additional resources and to replace the initial responding fire crews. 60 firefighters and 25 apparatus attended the incident and fire crews remain on scene to ensure the fire is completely extinguished.

Applications are closing on March 20, 2026, for Camp Courage Calgary – a camp for young women and gender-diverse youth, aged 15 to 18, that are interested in pursuing a career as a First Responder.

Camp Courage was originally founded by Andréa Speranza in Halifax in 2006 and we are excited to offer Camp Courage for the fifth year in Calgary.

Camp Courage Calgary is a free week-long camp for young women and gender-diverse youth, aged 15 to 18, who are interested in pursuing a career in fire services, policing, and/or paramedicine. The camp provides participants with the opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge of what it is like to work in emergency services, while empowering them to reach their full potential through challenging activities, leadership opportunities, and team building.

“I really love being able to encourage others, especially youth who are considering a career as a first responder. Mentoring campers at the fire stations has always been a highlight for me watching them learn, grow, and accomplish new things alongside their peers is incredibly rewarding. It can be so hard for teens to figure out what they’re passionate about, and choosing a career can feel overwhelming. Camp Courage helps bridge that gap by connecting them with inspiring mentors and showing them that a career like this is possible,” said Calgary Fire Recruitment Officer and Camp Courage Calgary Spokesperson, Tania Tyson.

This camp is only possible through the collaborative initiative delivered by women in Calgary Police Service, The Calgary Fire Department, and Emergency Health Services. It is funded by the Calgary Police Youth Foundation and the Bridges to Brighter Futures Program, which is proudly supported by the Shaw Family Foundation.

Shortly before 5:00pm fire crews were dispatched to southbound Deerfoot Trail around the Calf Robe bridge for a multi-vehicle collision. Fire crews arrived to find one vehicle on fire in the left-hand lane of southbound Deerfoot TR and several other vehicles with varying degrees of damage. 

Crew deployed hose lines and on approach determined there was one occupant trapped in the vehicle on fire. Firefighters were able to rapidly knock down the fire and needed to force open the driver side door to access the driver as there was significant damage to the vehicle and multiple airbags were deployed. The driver reportedly became verbally aggressive towards the firefighters and jumped over the barricade into northbound traffic. The driver then jumped onto the hoods of several vehicles that had slowed down in the northbound lanes.

A firefighter followed to bring them back to safety, at which point the driver attempted to attack the firefighter. An urgent call was made for Calgary Police Service (CPS) to assist; however, firefighters were able to quickly and safely subdue the driver.

CPS and Emergency Health Service (EHS) Ambulance crews arrived on scene, and the driver was assessed and transported to hospital. 

Fire crews cleaned up fluids and debris scattered across all lanes, while CPS and EHS assessed several other drivers on scene. Southbound Deerfoot was temporarily closed but some lanes have reopened. No first responders were injured and all other drivers assessed were not transported.

Fire crews used multiple hose lines to bring the fire under control and sent crews both interior and to the roof to end the spread of fire. Crews with the assistance of the Calgary Police Service (CPS) were able to quickly search and evacuate the adjacent businesses and all were able to escape unharmed. Fifteen people were assessed by EHS for smoke inhalation concerns, with no transport of patients necessary.

Crews from Atco and Enmax were on scene to isolate utilities, and CPS also provided necessary assistance controlling roads and the perimeter. 

Crews remain on scene, to ensure that there are no flareups of fire and to assist the investigators.

The cause has yet to be determined.

On arrival fire crews detected 500ppm of CO on entry to the home, levels which can be fatal with a few hours of exposure. For comparison, fire crews will evacuate people from a structure at 50ppm of CO. Crews donned self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) to safely enter the home and carried out second patient and removed them from the home.  EHS assessed both patients and transported. Fire crews completed a search of the home and confirmed there were no additional people or animals. They shut off the furnace and ventilated the home using electric fans until there was no CO reading in the home. ATCO gas attended the scene to support.

The Calgary Fire Department reminds all residents that working carbon monoxide alarms save lives and should be installed on every level of the home, especially near sleeping areas. Normally hot air rises and gases, such as CO, rise upwards however during very cold weather conditions a thermal inversion occurs and the cold air acts like a lid. This "lid” keeps gases like CO from rising and levels can build up much faster. Most commonly, the main source of CO gas in your home is your furnace, but any household appliances which run on fuels, like natural gas and propane and even fireplaces can be a source. Schedule routine maintenance and inspections performed by qualified personnel to ensure these appliances are working properly.

During cold weather conditions another common sources of CO is from vehicles. Never idle vehicles inside enclosed spaces, such as garages or near air inlets to buildings.

If you are exposed to CO gas, you may get flu-like symptoms such as:

• headaches
• nausea
• dizziness
• confusion
• fatigue
• lose consciousness. 

A CO alarm that is continuously repeating a 4-beeping pattern means it detects CO and everyone should get out and call 9-1-1. Let the Emergency Communications Officer know if anyone is experiencing the symptoms of CO exposure.

CO alarms should be installed on every level of the home including the basement and most importantly be placed near bedrooms so people can hear them where they sleep. CO alarms can be purchased at any hardware stores. Caution should be taken when ordering any CO alarms online and ensure that alarms meet Canadian safety standards.

Fire crews responded to a single-story residential home in the community of Pineridge. Crews arrived to find a home which was under renovation and unoccupied with a fire in the ceiling/attic space and quickly knockdown the smouldering fire. No injuries were reported and the fire was contained to the source home.

In the community of Silver Springs, a fire started on the exterior deck at the back of the house. Crews arrived and stretched a hose line to the back yard and were able to extinguish the fire before it spread inside the home. One senior occupant was assisted by fire crews while evacuating while the rest of the occupants were able to self-evacuated. No occupants were injured and the fire was contained to the source home.

At around midnight, fire crews responded to the community of Martindale for a basement fire. A neighbour called 9-1-1 after being alerted by one of the occupants that had self-evacuated. Crews made entry and were able to quickly knock down the fire. Two occupants were assessed by Emergency Health Services. The fire was limited to contents inside the basement and did not spread to the structure.

After fire crews' morning shift change, firefighters responded to a working fire in the community of Westgate. A neighbour notice smoke coming for a house next door and called 9-1-1. Fire crews arrived to find a fire inside a walk-in closet area of a single-story residential home. There was no one home at the time of the incident and no injuries were reported. The fire was contained to the room of origin.

The fifth fire was in the community of Bowness in a single-story residential home. Fire crews arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the rear roof area. Crews stretched hose lines to the back yard as heat from the fire broke a window while stretching another line to the front door. Crews in the backyard were able to apply water through the window which helped knock down and cool the fire. Firefighters then entered the front door and finished knocking down the fire from inside. After initial knockdown, crews noticed flames and heat had extended into the ceiling/roof and began overhaul operations. The home had extensive renovations and modifications as crews needed to break through several layers of ceiling and false roof to ensure the fire was out. There was no one home at the time of the incident this fire was also contained to the source home.

The causes of these fires are all under investigation as fire investigators attended all the incidents. While the cold weather conditions increase the risk of firefighting equipment freezing up or malfunctioning, fortunately those were not an issue at these fires. 

Calgary Fire Department would like to remind everyone:

• Please detour around fire incidents. Watch for emergency lights, Calgary Police vehicles, scene tape and traffic cones. These indicate that the road is closed and we place these traffic control devices at the nearest intersections to divert traffic.
• Keep anything that can burn at least 1 m away from any heat sources.
• Have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, test them by pressing the test button once a month, change any replaceable batteries at least once per year, some alarms are powered by ten-year batteries and batteries do not need to be changed, and replace alarms every ten years.
• Plan and practice a home escape plan at least twice a year. Everyone in the home should know two ways out in an emergency, where the safe meeting place is and the address of the home. The plan should include how to help anyone requiring assistance such as young children, seniors, people with disabilities or people with injuries.

The camp is open to individuals of all genders who are First Nations, Métis, Urban Indigenous and Inuit. Applicants must be 18 years of age before the start of camp and are not currently in the firefighter recruitment process. 

“CFD Indigenous Camp provides Indigenous individuals aged 18 and older with the opportunity to experience life as a firefighter,” shared Assistant Deputy Chief and Indigenous Firefighting Camp Executive Coordinator, Thomas Jukes.  

“Participants get to build confidence, leadership, teamwork, and fire safety skills that they can bring back to their families and communities. The camp also creates meaningful connections between CFD members and participants, allowing us to learn from each other, and identify better ways CFD can support Indigenous communities.”  

Participants will be introduced to the skills and knowledge required to become a firefighter through the direction of firefighter mentors and hands-on experiences including using firefighting equipment and tools such as the jaws of life, putting out a car fire, simulating search and rescue and forcible entry.

Shortly before 5:00am fire crews responded to the 200 block of 10 AV SW for a structure fire. On arrival fire crews saw flames and smoke in the back-alley entrance to a single-story commercial restaurant. Crews deployed hose lines and knocked down the fire from the alley. After initial knock down, crews noted continuous smoke despite no visible flames. Fire crew began overhaul operations to confirm the fire was extinguished and were on scene for an extend time as they needed to cut away layers of sub-flooring to access difficult to reach areas. CPS assisted with traffic control as traffic was closed along 10 AV SW between 1 ST SW and 2 ST SW. A fire engine needed to connect to a hydrant and traffic was also closed along 1 ST SW between 10 AV SW and 11 AV SW for the large volume hose line. There were some cleaning staff on site, but no injuries reported. Smoke spread to neighbouring businesses and activated the fire alarm system however there is no further risk, and the fire is under control. The building is also next to an active construction site but there are no impacts and workers were able to start their work with minimal impacts. Mechanical fans were used to clear smoke from the buildings. Two fire trucks remain on scene with the Fire Investigator.

Around 8:05am fire crews responded to a vehicle fire on Nose Hill DR NW in between Stoney Trail and 87 ST NW. On arrival fire crews found a City of Calgary Transit shuttle bus on fire. The driver met with crews and stated that they were the only person on board, and they had used the on-board fire extinguisher to attempt to extinguish. Fire crews used a hose line and on-board water from the fire engine and a tender truck to extinguish the fire. The driver was assessed by EHS and transported with non-life-threatening injuries. CPS assisted with traffic control when the road was temporarily closed. Cause is unknown and bus will be towed. As a result of cold temperature conditions, a sanding truck was requested as there is significant ice buildup from the water used to extinguisher the fire.

At approximately 8:10am fire crews responded to the 2900 block of 58 AV SE for an outside fire. On arrival fire crews saw flames and smoke at the bottom of the embankment behind a commercial business. Fire crews needed to cut a section of chain link fence in order to access the area then stretched a hose line and knocked down the fire. Crews found two patients who were alert and conscious and began initial medical assessments. A second fire engine was called to assist with patient care while crews worked to extinguish the fire prior to EHS arrival. Two ambulances attended and patient care was transferred on their arrival. Both patients were transported by EHS. Fire crews found an encampment with various items including a generator, propane tanks and gas cans. A fire investigator attended the scene and believed that the fire was caused by a heater inside of a tent that the patients were sleeping in.

As temperatures fluctuate and winter activities begin, The City of Calgary is reminding Calgarians that rivers, the Glenmore Reservoir, waterways and storm ponds are not safe to be on. 

There are more than 350 storm ponds located across the city that help reduce flooding and clean storm water before it goes back to our rivers. These ponds, like other bodies of water, have hidden risks and are not safe for any recreational activity, especially in winter.   

“Storm ponds may look like any other frozen pond, but they behave very differently,” said Alex Kwan, Public Information Officer, Calgary Fire Department.  

“Because water is constantly moving through these systems—and carrying sediment and roadway runoff—the ice can weaken without any warning. Even in long cold stretches, the ice on storm ponds is unpredictable and never safe to walk, skate, or play on.” 

 Ice safety tips  

• Never walk, skate, or play on storm ponds: Keep yourself, children and pets at a safe distance by staying on pathways.
• Watch for signs: Obey posted signs located near storm ponds and other bodies of water to stay and play safe.
• Play and skate where it's safe: There are designated locations around the city that are safe for winter fun! See what’s near you at calgary.ca/winteractivities and calgary.ca/rinks
• If you see activity on a storm pond call 3-1-1: Information about where the activity is happening on storm ponds helps us focus our public awareness and outreach.
• If you see a person or animal falling through the ice, call 9-1-1:
• Do not enter the water and attempt a rescue. Instead, encourage them to kick and pull themselves up onto the ice and roll, rather than walk towards the edge.
• If they cannot get themselves out of the water, from the shore, reach or throw an aid such as a hockey stick, or rope.
• Keep your eyes on them to provide 9-1-1 and fire crews with their exact location. 

What to do if you fall through ice 

• Stay calm and shout for help: Try to stay calm, control your breathing, keep your head above the water, and shout for help.
• Try to pull yourself onto the ice shelf: Keep your hands on the ice shelf, kick your legs, and try to pull yourself up on the ice and onto your stomach. Once out of the water, roll toward shore where the ice might be thicker.
• Continue to shout for help: If you can’t get out of the water in less than 10 minutes, anchor yourself to the ice shelf and continue to shout for help.
• If someone is nearby, have them call 911 immediately: Ice rescue is dangerous, bystanders should not enter the water.

At around 8:50am fire crews responded to a structure fire in the 100 block of 8 AV SW. On arrival fire crews we met by a staff member from the neighbouring business and directed to an alley (between 8 & 9 AV SW) entrance where they saw smoke & flames coming from back-alley side of a two-story retail business between 8 & 9 AV SW. Fire crews connected a fire hydrant, deployed hose lines, forced entry into the business, and started knocking down the fire. Fire crews removed a fridge unit into the alley, in addition to some other contents to fully extinguish the fire. The fire extended into the ceiling/attic space at the rear/alley side of the business, which was one story high. Fire crews set up a ground ladder to access the roof and found there to be a few layers of roofs/attics and voids spaces. Fire crews breached the layers of roof and applied water to hot spots. Additional fire crews checked adjacent businesses on both sides and confirmed that the fire and smoke was isolated to the source business. Occupants were able to safely remain inside. Some employees of the neighbouring businesses arriving for work waited outside near the alley. No injuries were reported and there were no occupants in the source business. CPS attended and temporarily closed a portion of 1 ST SW and helped keep bystanders clear of emergency operations. Emergency Health Services ambulance was on scene and cleared once it was confirmed there were no injuries. ATCO gas attended and gas to the buildings was temporarily shut off. The gas was turned back on shortly after 10:30am as it was deemed safe and allowed businesses to re-open including the restaurants.

Fire watch crews have been assigned to ensure no re-ignition or extension of fire while an investigator remains on scene to determine the origin and cause of fire.

At around 2:00pm fire crews responded to the 0-100 block of Panamount Heights NW for a house fire. The district fire crew was on their way back to the station and could see heavy smoke in the area as they were dispatched. On arrival fire crews saw heavy smoke and flames on the back side of multiple two-story residential homes, declared a working fire and called a second alarm. Occupants met crews outside and let them know that everyone was safely out. Crews quickly deployed multiple hose lines and sent teams into each home to check for occupants and knock down fire. Fire was held to the attic spaces and searches completed on the homes. No reports of injuries and all occupants were accounted for. Due to the significant amount of fire, a water tower was set up and used to douse the fires in the attic spaces. Once the bulk of the fire was knocked down, fire crews re-entered the homes with hose lines to extinguish hot spots. Fire crews were able to rescue two cats from one of the homes however one cat in the neighbouring home did not survive. CPS, ATCO and Enmax all attended the scene. Utilities were shut off to the homes and CPS controlled traffic and notified the public to avoid the area. The fire appears to have originated on the exterior, but it is unknown on which home. Fire investigators are on scene and have started their investigation to confirm the origin and cause.

Improper disposal of smoking materials is the leading cause of outdoor fires in Calgary. To help reduce outdoor fire risks, Calgarians should make an effort to properly dispose of smoking materials.

It is recommended to:

• Never put out cigarettes or smoking material in flower planters, peat moss, your lawn or garden.
• Use a deep, wide, sturdy metal container with a lid, filled part way with sand or water that should be emptied regularly.
• Ensure all butts and ash are out by soaking them with water prior to putting in the trash.
• Never discard your butts by throwing them off of your balcony, or out of your vehicle window.

Due to the volume of fire and the risk of spread to neighbouring properties, a second alarm was called, bringing additional resources to the scene. 

During initial search, crews found and removed 2 adult patients from the basement of one of the homes where they were transferred to Emergency Health Services. Both patients were transported to Foothills Medical Center with critical but non-life-threatening injuries. 

Crews worked quickly to bring the fire under control. The 2 homes sustained significant damage. A neighbouring home sustained minor exterior damage. Due to the amount of damage, residents of both homes will be displaced. 

Crews will remain on scene to ensure the fire is extinguished. Fire investigators remain on scene to determine the exact origin and cause of the fire. 

The Calgary Fire Department reminds residents of the following fire safety practices: 

• Ensure working smoke alarms are installed on every level of your home and outside all sleeping areas. 

• Test alarms monthly and replace batteries at least once a year.

• Keep combustible materials away from the exterior of your home to reduce the risk of fire spread.

• Have a home fire escape plan and practice it regularly with all household members.

At around 9:00am on Wednesday Nov 19, the Calgary Fire Department Technical Rescue team was dispatched to a construction site in the 200 block of 8 AV SE for a rescue. On arrival crews were met by a worker that stated that the crane operator was having a medical emergency. One firefighter climbed up the crane to start a patient assessment while the other crew members prepared rescue equipment and gear. It was determined that the operator was unable to get down on their own, so the technical rescue team proceeded up the crane to set up a rope system. Firefighters climbed and carried equipment up the approximately 50-meter/16 story crane tower and set up a rope system anchored to the peak of the tower. The patient was harnessed and lowered with a rescuer safely to the ground. Fire crews and Emergency Health Services personnel worked together to transfer the patient to ambulance. Fire crews disassembled the rope systems and lowered all gear and equipment back to the ground.

The Calgary Fire Department Technical Rescue team is a specialized team trained in advance rescue skills which include high-angle and low-angle rope rescue, building collapse, confined space, mechanical entrapment and vehicle extrication and trench rescues. These team members perform these duties in addition to front line firefighting and emergency response that every fire station in Calgary provides. The Technical Rescue teams are deployed out of the Briar Hill Fire Station # 10 and Windsor Park Fire Station #11.

As CFD’s fifth fire investigations dog since 1991, Titus is a two-year-old American Field Labrador trained to detect ignitable liquids used to start or accelerate fires. He can locate a drop as little as 0.2 microliters of an ignitable liquid helping investigators determine cause, enhance public safety and assist in determining potential arson.

“Working canines like Titus serve a unique role in the fire service as they significantly improve the accuracy and speed of fire investigations,” said Deputy Chief Pete Steenaerts. “What may take specialized tools hours to detect, Titus can identify within minutes.”

“Information gained from fire investigations directly supports public education campaigns and safety messaging, helping Calgarians prevent fires before they start, while assisting arson investigations in partnership with the Calgary Police Service.”

Titus joined the CFD in March this year and serves alongside his handler, Canine Investigator Brad Brookes, who has been with the CFD for 18 years.

Titus has been busy in his new assignment, attending 33 fire investigations since March across a broad range of fire incidents including house, automotive, warehouse, storage facilities, outside deck and patios.

Both Titus and Investigator Brookes received their training from the Canine Accelerant Detection Association (CADA) and are re-certified yearly to maintain high standards required for fire investigations.   

“This is such an amazing program and an incredible tool for investigations,” shared Investigator Brookes. “Titus helps us gather vital information and data to solve fire investigations—and the best part is getting to work with an animal every day. I love animals, and it’s truly special to represent the department with a partner like Titus.”

Training, Trust and Community  

Titus was born in Wisconsin and began his training at 8 weeks old, through Reliant Investigations under the CADA Fire Dogs program. He is trained through a food reward system to locate hydrocarbons and ignitable liquids; compounds that leave a residue after a fire has been extinguished. Titus can identify ethanol, acetone, paint thinner, gasoline, diesel, camp fuel, kerosene and more.

As part of their work, Titus and Investigator Brookes attend fire scenes, train daily and engage with the community, as well as assisting surrounding fire departments with investigations.

Titus wears his badge and vest while on duty. To ensure Titus is safe, Investigator Brookes will clear any debris that could potentially harm Titus and ensures that air quality levels are safe. When Titus locates an ignitable liquid, he will indicate it by laying on his stomach and pointing at the area with his nose. Investigator Brookes will then collect an area of 12 inches around and send the sample off to a lab.  

After each scene, Titus is given a bath and receives regular veterinary check-ups to monitor his health.  

Titus’ safety is the top priority in all situations, which means that he will never be forced to work if he shows signs of being uncomfortable. Both Titus and Investigator Brookes have built their relationship on this trust to be able to perform at their best for each other. 

“I can’t see or smell ignitable liquids, so I have to trust Titus completely,” said Investigator Brookes. “He knows what he’s doing, I just help guide him there. There’s a deep trust between us. He searches, and I interpret the patterns he’s showing me, almost like painting a picture of what happened.”

Another important part of Titus’ work is being with Calgarians. Investigator Brookes and Titus can be seen at school demonstrations, library visits and other public events where they help promote fire safety and education. Because of Titus’ calm and gentle demeanor many people will often come up and ask to say hi, which for many is their first positive experience with a working K9.   

When off duty, Titus lives with Investigator Brookes and his family where he gets to be regular dog who loves to eat, sleep and play.

Titus is fully funded through a special partnership agreement with Calgary’s AGAT Laboratories, at no cost to taxpayers. This agreement covers all food, training, veterinary care and operational needs.

At around 1:40am fire crews responded to the 700 block of 10 AV SW for a building fire at a commercial restaurant. On arrival fire crew saw visible flames and smoke coming from the rear exterior deck and fire extending along the outside of the building. Fire crews deployed a hose line in the alley and quickly knocked down the fire. A total of 11 fire apparatus and 32 firefighters attended the scene. Fire crews found a locked storage area under the deck and broke a lock to gain entry to verify that there were no signs of fire. Heat and fire extension are believed to have broken the windows on the rear of the building, resulting in extensive damage to a washroom and private dining room. Damages are estimated to be between $200,000-$300,000. The fire was knocked down before extending into the kitchen and main dining area. Fire crews completed a search of the building and there were no occupants found. One firefighter sustained a minor injury while gaining entry to the building and was provided first aid on scene. ATCO gas attended and shut off gas to the building and power was shut off at the main panel. Fire crews used thermal imaging cameras to check for extension of fire. There were no signs of extension or structural damage.

A CFD Fire Investigator attended the scene and confirmed the fire appears to have originated at the rear of the building and on the deck area. The building was left in the care of the owner, and no fire watch crews were required. A second fire investigator is continuing the investigation during daylight.

Upon arrival, fire crews faced significant smoke and flames from a 2-story single family residential home. Firefighters quickly initiated an aggressive exterior attack followed by an interior offensive attack and searches on all levels. One water tower was set up to initiate and then assist in fire attack. The source home suffered extensive damage due to fire extension, smoke, and water with no additional damage to exposures.

Two residents who were not home at the time of the fire will be displaced for an undetermined amount of time. One firefighter was assessed by EHS as a precaution for smoke inhalation but was not transported. No other injuries were reported.

CPS assisted and provided traffic and crowd control at scene. Atco and Enmax were dispatched and ensured there were no hazards relating to services.

Fire crews including a fire investigator will remain on scene to ensure there is no fire extension and to confirm extinguishment.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

• Received at least 167 calls related to fireworks complaints with the majority of complaints coming from the communities of Redstone, Cornerstone, Skyview Ranch, Cityscape, Saddle Ridge, Taradale and Martindale.

Emergency Management and Community Safety (EMCS)

• Business Safety inspected 75 businesses and found that most were complying with firework bylaws.
  • Three charges were issued to businesses for selling fireworks without a permit.
  • Community Safety Peace Officers handed out one ticket for discharging a firework and 32 verbal warnings.
  • Roughly 60 pounds of fireworks were voluntarily surrendered or abandoned when people saw Community Safety officers and fled.
  • 29 calls to 311 related to fireworks/noise

 Calgary Fire Department

• Fire crews responded to a vehicle fire in the 1100 block of Cornerstone Way N.E. at around 9:15 p.m. on Monday, October 20, 2025. On arrival fire crews found a pickup truck on fire with visible flames and smoke coming from the front hood of the truck. The fire was contained to the vehicle and did not spread to any other structures or property. While no injuries were reported, there is an estimated to be over $30,000 worth of damage. Fire crews reported that residents were setting off fireworks prior to the fire starting.  A CFD Fire Investigator attended the scene and stated that the fire appears to have originated in the wheel well of the truck and believes that a lit portion of the fireworks went into the wheel well and started the fire. The CPS was called and also attended the scene.
• On Tuesday October 21, 2025, at around11:55 p.m., fire crews responded to a structure fire in the 7100 block of 80 Avenue N.E. A ladder truck was first to arrive on scene and fire crews observed flames on a fourth-floor balcony of a four-story, multi-unit large residential complex and called a working fire. The ladder truck was setup to access and extinguish the fire while another crew gained entry to the building and accessed the unit and balcony from the interior. Fire crews found two people inside the impacted unit with no injuries and no awareness of the fire on their balcony. The fire was limited to the balcony and no smoke or fire entered the unit. Crews found a smoldering planter pot on the balcony which appears to be where the fire originated. Crews checked for hot spots and confirmed that the fire was out and there was no further risk of fire. The building’s fire alarm was activated and reset by CFD after the incident. No occupants were displaced. A CFD Investigator attended the scene and reported evidence of fireworks landing on the balcony where the fire started. Neighbours reported hearing and seeing fireworks being set off across the street.

The City of Calgary's safety partners remind everyone that fireworks and pyrotechnics cannot be ignited or fired in Calgary except by a trained and certified professional with a fireworks permit. This includes consumer fireworks that have been purchased or ordered outside Calgary.

• Use of fireworks, pyrotechnics or blasting without a permit is in violation of the National Fire Code (Alberta Edition) and City of Calgary bylaws and may result in fines or prosecution
• If you violate the fireworks bylaw, you may face penalties. These include fines based on the nature of the infraction:

o   Possession of fireworks without a permit: Minimum fine of $500.

o   Use of fireworks without a permit: Minimum fine of $250.

o   Sale of fireworks without a permit: Minimum fine of $250.

o   These fines are designed to protect our city from fire hazards and ensure that fireworks displays are conducted responsibly by trained professionals.

o   The City encourages anyone who observes fireworks going off to report their concerns to 311 and include details on neighbourhood/location.

Over the next several nights, Calgarians will see joint proactive education and enforcement teams in the community to help remind the public and enforce appropriate bylaws.
