Suspicious death in northeast Calgary ruled a homicide, victim identified

Following an autopsy completed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner today, Friday, Feb. 17, 2023, the suspicious death involving a body that was found in Deerfoot Athletic Park, yesterday, Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023, has been ruled a homicide.

At approximately 10:35 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023, we were called to Deerfoot Athletic Park, located at 1616 8 Ave. N.E., for reports that a citizen had located a body. Upon arrival, officers located a deceased individual.

The victim has been identified as Judy MAERZ, 58, of Calgary. 

Detectives are asking anyone who may have been at the park or anyone who knows Judy MAERZ to come forward. Additionally, anyone who has a dashcam and was driving northbound on Deerfoot Trail between Memorial Drive and 16 Avenue N.E., on the morning of Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023, between 4 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., is asked to contact investigators.

“We are currently interviewing friends and associates of Ms. MAERZ in order to determine her recent activity,” says Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit.  “We are asking anyone who knew Judy or had recent contact with her to get in touch with us. If anyone was driving past the park on Thursday morning, we also need them to come forward, as they may have unknowingly seen something and may have critical information that could help us.”
