Suspected arsonist sought

Police are seeking assistance from the public to identify a person believed to be connected to two arsons at houses in northwest Calgary, the latest occurring earlier today.

Just after 3 a.m., on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, the Calgary Fire Department were called to a house fire in the 1100 block of Varsity Estates Drive N.W. Subsequent collection of CCTV showed a man setting fire to a back shed before fleeing. The fire spread to the garage and house. It is believed the man had been car prowling in the area prior to setting the fire.

Arson investigators believe the same person may be involved in another fire which was reported around 5 a.m., today, Saturday, June 4, 2022, in the 1200 block of Varsity Estates Road N.W. It is also believed he may have been car prowling in the neighbourhood before the fire was started.

The suspect is described as being between 20 and 30 years old, with a light skin tone and clean shaven. He is usually wearing a hat and carrying a black backpack.

We are thankful that no one was injured as a result of these fires, however, it is deeply concerning that fires are being set at or near residential homes while residents are home, and often asleep. At this time, there is no information to indicate these are targeted incidents and the motive remains unknown. It is critically important that we identify and locate the person we believe to be connected to these events.

It is recommended that residents keep their outdoor lights on, secure garages and sheds, and call 9-1-1 if you spot the suspect.
