Speed believed to be factor in fatal collision

A man in his 20s was killed early this morning in a single-vehicle collision in northeast Calgary.

At about 3:45 a.m. today, Thursday, Jan. 29, 2026, a 2025 Kia K4 was travelling northbound on Barlow Trail N.E., when it struck the traffic median near Seventh Avenue N.E. The vehicle then struck a traffic signal pole in the centre median.

The driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, was declared deceased on scene.

Speed is believed to be a factor in the collision. Alcohol and drug impairment remain under investigation.

This is Calgary’s second fatal collision of 2026.

We continue to work with our partners at The City of Calgary to implement the Safer Mobility Plan with the common goal of Vision Zero – mobility free of fatalities and major injuries.
