Speed believed to be a factor in two fatal collisions on Stoney Trail

Our Traffic Unit continues to investigate after two fatal collisions occurred on Stoney Trail over the weekend.

The first collision occurred on Friday, June 27, 2025, at approximately 9:55 p.m., on Stoney Trail S.W. near 69 Street S.W., resulting in the death of a 16-year-old boy.

At the time, it is believed a 2014 sedan was travelling westbound on Stoney Trail S.W. in the left lane, approaching the Highway 8 exit, when the vehicle left the roadway towards the grassy median. The vehicle struck a support post for an overhead directional sign, resulting in the vehicle catching on fire.

The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was declared deceased at the scene.

Neither alcohol or drugs are believed to be factors in this collision. Excessive speed is being investigated as a possible factor.

The second fatal collision occurred yesterday, Sunday, June 29, 2025, at approximately 6:17 p.m., on Stoney Trail S.W., south of the Bow Trail interchange.

At the time, it is believed a 2001 Toyota 4 Runner, operated by a 25-year-old man, was travelling south on Stoney Trail S.W., when the Toyota left the roadway, travelling across the grassy median, and entered into the northbound lanes of Stoney Trail. The vehicle rolled before being struck by a 2008 Dodge Caliber, operated by a 25-year-old woman, who was travelling north on Stoney Trail.

As a result of the collision, the driver of the Toyota was ejected from the vehicle and struck a large overhead directional sign, sustaining fatal injuries.

The Dodge came to a rest facing south in the northbound lanes of Stoney Trail S.W.

The driver of the Dodge suffered serious life-threatening injuries. The passenger, a 22-year-old man, suffered minor injuries. Both were transported to hospital.

Neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to be factors in this collision. Excessive speed is being investigated as a possible factor.
