Serious-injury collision under investigation

We continue to investigate a collision that occurred early this morning in southeast Calgary.

At about 12:30 a.m. today, Thursday, Jan. 4, 2024, we responded to a serious-injury collision involving a pickup truck and a snowplow on Stoney Trail near the 52nd Street S.E. interchange.

It is believed that at the time of the collision, the snowplow, operated by a man in his 50s, was travelling westbound on Stoney Trail, doing weather-related maintenance on the roadway. At the same time, a half-ton pickup truck, operated by a male in his late teens, was also travelling westbound, when the pickup truck driver suddenly changed lanes and struck the rear of the snowplow.

The driver of the pickup truck was transported to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries. The driver of the snowplow was transported to hospital with minor injuries.

Alcohol use and excessive speed on the part of the pickup truck driver are being investigated as factors in this collision.
