Serious collision involving gravel truck and trailer

We are investigating a serious injury collision that involved a gravel truck and trailer and two SUVs that occurred last night.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2020, a Kenworth gravel truck and trailer operated by a 46-year-old man was travelling east on McKnight Boulevard N.E. near Barlow Trail, when it rear-ended a Honda Pilot also travelling east.

The Honda, which was being driven by a 33-year-old man, lost control and spun out onto the centre emergency shoulder before spinning back across the eastbound traffic lanes of McKnight Boulevard. The driver was not injured as a result of the collision.

After colliding with the Honda, the gravel truck veered left and travelled across the shoulder and onto the centre median, before entering the westbound lanes of McKnight Boulevard.

The gravel truck then struck a Toyota Highlander travelling west on McKnight, with two occupants: a 37-year-old male passenger and a 39-year-old male driver. The Toyota Highlander was forced backward and off the road onto the boulevard, where it came to rest.

The occupants of the Toyota Highlander suffered minor injuries and were transported to hospital for treatment.

The gravel truck continued off the road up and over a berm, where it struck two trees before coming to a rest in the parking lot of the Hilton Garden Inn, located on Pegasus Road N.E.

The truck and trailer were significantly damaged as a result of the collisions. The 46-year-old male driver suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital.

Excessive speed, alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in this collision.

We are looking to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the collision and are asking them to call the non-emergency number at 403-266-1234 or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously through any of the following methods:
