Seeking to identify suspects in hate-motivated assault

We are asking for the public’s help to identify two men believed to be responsible for an assault that occurred last week.

On Friday, Nov.11, 2022, at approximately 2:40 p.m., two men were sitting at a vestibule at the Franklin LRT station when two unknown males arrived and sat directly next to them despite ample seating throughout the platform. Feeling uncomfortable, the two men left the bench and stood outside the vestibule awaiting the northbound train. The unknown males again approached them, and a verbal altercation occurred resulting in one of the unknown men physically assaulting one of the two men as they boarded the train and left the scene.

Based on additional details from the victim, our Hate Crime and Extremism Unit has taken over the investigation.

We are now asking for the public’s help to identify two suspects believed to be in their early 20s. At the time of the assault, the first suspect was wearing a black coat with a grey fur-lined hood, a black hat, white sneakers and wearing red headphones around his neck. The second suspect was wearing blue sunglasses, a blue baseball hat, an orange construction jacket, blue pants and white sneakers carrying a brown shoulder bag.

Photos of the suspects are available on the City of Calgary Newsroom.

A hate crime is a criminal offence committed against a person or property, which is motivated in whole or part by the suspect’s hate, bias or prejudice towards an identifiable group. Any evidence of a hate motivation is considered by the courts after a person is found guilty of the connected crime. If the judge decides during sentencing that hate was a motivation for the offence, it is an aggravating factor that can add to the convicted person’s sentence.

Anyone with information about this incident or the identity of the male suspect is asked to contact police by calling 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers through any of the following methods:
