Second man arrested in relation to 1994 double homicide
After continuing to examine forensic evidence and utilizing current investigative techniques, we have charged a second man in relation to a double homicide that occurred in 1994.
On July 11, 1994, two intruders entered a residence located in the 2500 block of 10 Avenue S.E., and shot and killed two men. The offenders fled the residence and the victims were later identified as Barry Christian BUCHART, 26, and Trevor Thomas DEAKINS, 25. The motive is believed to be associated to the sale of marijuana from within the residence.
Despite an extensive investigation, the culprits were not identified. Since then, the file has been reviewed and investigated several times.
In 2019, 25 years later, homicide investigators assigned to the Historical Homicide Team reopened the file and existing forensic evidence was utilized to help identify one of the suspects. As a result, Leonard Brian COCHRANE, 51, of Calgary was charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
After laying charges, investigators continued searching for the second suspect, which included utilizing advancements in forensic technology and techniques. Through this process, a second suspect was identified and arrested on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2023.
Stuart Douglass MACGREGOR, 54, of Calgary, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He will next appear in court on Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2023.
“Over the past 29 years, there has been significant advancement in forensic technology, which allows investigators to re-examine evidence that may have been collected years prior,” says Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson of the CPS Homicide Unit. “This is yet another example of our commitment to the pursuit of justice, no matter how much time has passed.”
As there are ongoing judicial proceedings in relation to this case, no further information can be shared.
