Recount on request, mayor
Under the authority of Section 98.1 of the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA), the Returning Officer, having received an application for a recount made in accordance with subsection (2), and being satisfied that the difference between the number of valid ballots marked for the candidate with the highest number of votes and the number of valid ballots marked for the candidate with the 2nd highest number of votes is within 0.5% of the total number of valid ballots marked at the election for that office, will make a recount of the votes cast for the election of mayor at all voting stations in the 2025 General Election.
The recount will be held:
Date: Monday, October 27, 2025
Time: 9:30 a.m.
Location: The Big Four Roadhouse, 1801 Big Four Trail S.E.
Following the recount, the mayor contest ballot account will be corrected, if necessary. Any changes to the official results will be communicated by the Returning Officer.
Background
Previously, the Returning Officer communicated that a recount on request was limited to a recount of valid ballots at a voting station, as stated in Section 98.1(1) of the LAEA. This interpretation was carefully reviewed in the months leading up to planning the 2025 General Election.
Recently, the Government of Alberta communicated that the threshold to request a recount under Section 98.1 of the LAEA is to apply to the total number of valid ballots cast for candidates in an election, rather than results at individual voting stations.
On October 23, 2025, the Returning Officer reached out to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs (“the Ministry”) to clarify the intent of Section 98.1 and in response, received written clarification from the Ministry in keeping with Section 6(2) of the LAEA.
The Returning Officer would like to express her sincere appreciation to the Hon. Dan Williams, Minister of Municipal Affairs for his prompt response to ensure clarity and public trust in the 2025 General Election.
