Public assistance sought in northwest break and enter
We are asking for the public’s help to identify a woman believed to be responsible for a residential break and enter in the northwest community of Varsity in September.
At approximately 5:15 p.m., on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2023, it is believed that an unknown individual or individuals broke into a vehicle that was parked at Edgemont Athletic, located at 7222 Edgemont Blvd. N.W. and stole a garage door opener and registration information. The individuals went to the address on the registration, located in the 200 block of Varsity Estates Terrace N.W., entered the residence, and stole jewelry and money from the home.
At about 5:30 p.m., the vehicle owner noticed her garage door opener and registration missing from the vehicle and received a notification on her cellphone advising her that her garage door had been activated. She called 9-1-1 to report a possible break-in and notified her teenage daughter, who was home at the time.
The teenage resident, while at home, looked out the window and saw one person enter the residence. When she thought the person had left, she called 9-1-1 and went to check the house. While she was on the phone with the 9-1-1 operator, an unknown woman entered the residence through the back door, saw her and ran out of the house. When police arrived at the residence at approximately 5:40 p.m., the suspect or suspects had left.
Investigators have exhausted all avenues to identify the suspect and are now turning to the public for information.
The woman is described as approximately 50 years old with a heavy build and dark hair. At the time of the break and enter, she was wearing a grey hoodie.
While there is no security camera footage available, we have worked with the witness to develop a composite sketch of the suspect.
