Police seek public’s help to identify suspect in hate-motivated assault

We are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a man believed to be responsible for a hate-motivated assault that occurred in the southeast community of Erin Woods.

On Monday, June 30, 2025, at approximately 4:45 p.m. a man was riding Calgary Transit Bus Route 23 when it stopped near the intersection of 52 Street and Erin Woods Drive S.E. An unknown individual, the suspect, exited the bus, followed by the victim, who also got off at the same stop.

It’s believed the suspect then suddenly and without warning physically assaulted the victim while yelling racial slurs. The suspect then got into a black SUV and left the area heading northbound toward 17 Avenue S.E.

The suspect is described as approximately between 5’7” and 6’ tall with a medium build. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a dark baseball cap and grey top.

Any evidence of hate motivation is considered by the courts after a person is found guilty of the connected crime. If the judge decides during sentencing that hate was a motivation for the offence, it is an aggravating factor that can add to the convicted person’s sentence.

There is no place for hate in our city. Hate-motivated crimes are recognizable crimes, like assault, theft, vandalism or any other crime, where the offender was motivated by bias, prejudice or hate that is based on one of nine personal characteristics of the victim. If you see hate, report it. Visit www.reporthate.ca for more information on how and why to report.

Anyone with information about the identity of the suspect is asked to contact police by calling 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers through any of the following methods:
