Police seek public assistance in identifying suspect in hate-motivated assault

We are asking the public for their help in identifying a man who is believed to be responsible for a hate-motivated assault that occurred downtown last month.

On Thursday, July 3, 2025, at approximately 1:40 p.m., a woman and her family were walking southbound along Fourth Street S.W., near 10 Avenue S.W., when an unknown man began shouting racial comments at them from across the street. The man then verbally threatened the family as he crossed the street and approached them in an aggressive manner. In an effort to protect her family, the woman stepped in front of her family to create distance before being physically assaulted by the man. The victim’s family called police during the assault, and the suspect fled the scene prior to police arrival.

The suspect is described as approximately 5’8” tall, with a slim build, light brown hair and a short beard. At the time of the assault, he was carrying a grey and black backpack and wearing a red T-shirt, jeans, and black and white sneakers.

Any evidence of hate motivation is considered by the courts after a person is found guilty of the connected crime. If the judge decides during sentencing that hate was a motivation for the offence, it is an aggravating factor that can add to the convicted person’s sentence.

There is no place for hate in our city. Hate-motivated crimes are recognizable crimes, like assault, theft, vandalism or any other crime, where the offender was motivated by bias, prejudice or hate that is based on one of nine personal characteristics of the victim. If you see hate, report it. Visit www.reporthate.ca for more information on how and why to report.

Anyone with information about the identity if the suspect is asked to contact police by calling 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers through any of the following methods:
