Police seek information on series of hate-motivated assaults

We are seeking witnesses and anyone who may have information that can further an investigation into the assault of two women downtown this summer. Both incidents have been determined to be motivated by hate.

On Friday, July 11, 2025, a woman walking along Eighth Avenue S.E., heading from northbound Macleod Trail, was confronted by a man who began making inappropriate remarks. Despite her repeated requests for him to stop, the situation escalated as the man began threatening the woman. A nearby witness stepped in to help the woman safely distance herself from the individual. She later reported the incident to police.

On Thursday, July 24, 2024, a woman was walking from her vehicle in the 400 block of Eighth Avenue S.E. when a man walking towards her suddenly charged at the woman, shouting racial comments at her. In fear of her personal safety, the woman retreated back to her vehicle. The following day the woman asked her colleagues to walk her to her vehicle, where they once again spotted the same man on a nearby bench. As they walked by, the man spat at the woman and her colleagues.

The suspect in these incidents has been identified; however, we are hoping to locate the witness in the incident on July 11, as well as any additional witnesses, or anyone with information in relation to these incidents to obtain additional evidence to further the investigation.

Our Hate Crime Prevention Team is investigating and hate is believed to be a factor in both incidents.

Any evidence of hate motivation is considered by the courts after a person is found guilty of the connected crime. If the judge decides during sentencing that hate was a motivation for the offence, it is an aggravating factor that can add to the convicted person’s sentence.

There is no place for hate in our city. Hate-motivated crimes are recognizable crimes, like assault, theft, vandalism or any other crime, where the offender was motivated by bias, prejudice or hate that is based on one of nine personal characteristics of the victim.
