Police seek information in 2021 gang-related homicide
We continue to investigate the violent shooting of Gurkeert Singh KALKAT, also known as Gary KALKAT, of Calgary, and Surrey, B.C., that occurred in May 2021.
KALKAT was found deceased in his vehicle on Saturday, May 22, 2021, at approximately 5:30 p.m., in an alley near the 1800 block of 26 Avenue S.W.
This homicide is believed to be one of many targeted, pre-planned and deliberate incidents directly related to the previous and ongoing gang conflict occurring throughout the lower mainland in British Columbia. The victim’s brother was also murdered on Thursday, May 13, 2021, in Burnaby, B.C, outside of a busy restaurant.
Several years have passed since the homicide of KALKAT, and given this is believed to be a gang-related incident, we know allegiances and loyalties to various organized crime groups can change over time, so we are once again asking the public to come forward with tips or information that could further the investigation.
A key piece of evidence that police have not been able to locate is the getaway vehicle used by the suspects to flee the scene.
At the time of the homicide, we shared photos and a description of a blue, four-door Subaru Impreza believed to be connected to the homicide, and now investigators believe that vehicle could also be a Subaru Legacy.
Immediately following the incident, the Subaru was believed to have travelled in the Marda Loop area. From the scene, the vehicle travelled west on 32 Avenue S.W., then south on 22 Street S.W., to 33 Avenue S.W., and north on Crowchild Trail S.W.
Anyone who may have information in relation to the suspect vehicle is asked to contact police.
“These types of organized crime-related files are often difficult to solve without help from the public,” says Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit. “A lot of the answers investigators are seeking come from the community, which is why we are asking anyone who has information about this homicide to contact police. This, and other gang-related files, are never closed. We will continue to investigate these incidents even years after they occur, as there is always a chance new information will become available to aid in solving the case.”
