Police respond to incident involving equipment at downtown market

We are currently investigating an incident that occurred earlier this afternoon at a temporary market setup outside City Hall, which left eight people injured.

At approximately 3 p.m., today, Saturday, June 28, 2025, we were called to City Hall Plaza, located at 800 Macleod Tr. S.E., for reports that equipment setup for an outdoor event, Naija Market Day, had collapsed and struck multiple individuals.

Upon arrival, our officers determined a light standard and TV screens had fallen, causing non-life-threatening injuries to seven adults and one youth.

All eight individuals were transported to hospital.

Due to the emergency services response, temporary lane closures were implemented along Macleod Trail, however, the roads have since reopened.

Naija Market Day organizers held the appropriate permits to operate the event within the plaza.

Our General Investigations Unit as well as Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collapsed equipment.
