Police resolve suspicious package call

The Calgary Police Service has neutralized a suspicious package that was left in front of a residence in the 6300 block of 31 Avenue N.W.

Police were called to the residence at approximately 7:15 a.m., on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2017, after a passerby found a barrel sitting outside the home with the word “Explosives” written on the side.

The area was evacuated and contained while the Tactical Unit was dispatched to neutralize the package. At approximately 10:30 a.m., the barrel was destroyed by the bomb technicians as a precaution.

The area is now safe for the public and police will be on-scene for the next few hours investigating the contents of the barrel and determining who may have put it there.

At this time, it is not known exactly how much of a threat was posed by the package or why it was left.

The General Investigations Unit will be leading the investigation.
