Police now investigate senior’s death as homicide

A resident injured in a fire at a senior’s facility last month died on Wednesday, May 27, 2020, as a result of their injuries. This incident is now being investigated as a homicide.

At approximately 1:25 a.m., on Monday, April 27, 2020, police were called to Wentworth Manor, located at 5717 14 Avenue S.W., for reports of a suspicious fire. Upon arrival, the Calgary Fire Department had contained the fire and a man in his late 80s was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition.

Investigators had charged a resident of the facility with one count of arson in relation to the fire, and additional charges may be pending dependant upon the homicide investigation. The suspect suffers from a mental health condition and the man’s identity is not being released.
