Police looking to speak with Good Samaritan in attempted murder case

Investigators are looking to speak with a Good Samaritan who may have information regarding an attempted murder in downtown Calgary in mid-May.

At approximately 1:45 a.m., on Friday, May 17, 2024, police responded to the 0 to 100 block of Third Avenue S.E. for reports of an assault with a weapon against two victims.

Investigators believe the victims, a man and a woman, were reviewing a City Centre Information Map in the area of Centre Street and Fourth Avenue South when a youth wielding a knife approached them and attempted to stab the man. The victims proceeded to run away and were pursued by the suspect. They ran for five blocks, at which point the woman proceeded down an alleyway in the 0 to 100 block of Third Avenue S.E., where she hid underneath a parked car. The suspect followed her, and the man was able to flag down patrol officers for assistance. Neither victim sustained injuries from the incident.

The suspect attempted to flee when police arrived but was taken into custody a short distance away. 

The suspect and the victims are not known to one another.

The accused, aged 16, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder in relation to this incident. Under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the accused cannot be named.

The youth will next appear in court on Thursday, June 6, 2024.

Investigators are looking to speak with a Good Samaritan who may have information to help further the investigation. It is believed the individual was standing near the Dragon City Mall located at 328 Centre St. S.E. at approximately 1:40 a.m., when she saw the woman running and followed her into the alleyway to check on her welfare. The Good Samaritan is described as an Indigenous woman between the ages of 25 and 35, with a medium-heavy build and dark hair. At the time of the incident she was carrying a small black purse, wore her hair in a high bun, and was wearing a grey zip-up hoodie, black mid-thigh bike shorts and black moccasins.
