Police lay charges in bank robbery

Swift action and attentive witnesses have helped police make a quick arrest in relation to a bank robbery that occurred last week in the northwest.

On Monday, Nov. 8, 2021, at approximately 4 p.m., an unknown man entered the CIBC bank located at 5617 4 Street N.W. He approached one of the tellers and handed them a note indicating he had a firearm and demanded cash. The teller complied and provided the man with an undisclosed amount of money. He then fled the bank in a vehicle.

No injuries were sustained by bank employees or customers.

The bank staff immediately called police and members arrived on scene a short time later. After reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses, the suspect was described to investigators as wearing a surgical mask, a toque and a construction vest. Police quickly spotted the suspect in the area shortly after the incident occurred and were able to apprehend him without incident.

As a result, Glenn Garry FRASER, 54, has been charged with one count of robbery and one count of wearing a disguise.

He will next appear in court on Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2021.

“We are pleased to share that we were able to quickly make an arrest and lay charges in this bank robbery,” says Staff Sergeant Rod Harbidge of the Calgary Police Service Robbery Unit. “Despite being in an alarming situation, the bank staff acted quickly and were able to provide us with solid information that ultimately led to an arrest. We would like to thank the employees and the witnesses for helping us successfully resolve this matter.”
