Police investigating three separate deaths since Friday
Our Homicide Unit has been incredibly busy investigating three separate deaths that occurred since Friday. In addition to a significant amount of work for our homicide investigators, who have been working around the clock, resources across the Service have been impacted with the additional tasks of collecting evidence, holding scenes across Calgary, speaking to witnesses, conducting interviews and locating suspects. Investigators have since charged offenders in two of the incidents.
These three deaths are unrelated, and autopsies are ongoing this week. While the motivations for these incidents differ, the level of violence is a significant concern for our Service and we have engaged multiple resources in effort to prevent and suppress further violence.
Mar.18 - Fatal stabbing downtown- Update
The autopsy of the victim in Friday morning’s fatal stabbing has been completed today, Monday, Mar. 21, 2022, by The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Vanessa LADOUCEUR, 31, of Calgary has been identified as the victim of Calgary’s fourth homicide of the year.
Investigators have ruled out any possible connection between the victim and the accused, confirming the death to have been the result of a random attack.
“Any loss of life is tragic, but especially in situations like this,” says Staff Sergeant Sean Gregson of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit. “This type of senseless violence has no place in our community, and we know that this incident has impacted many Calgarians. We offer our sincere condolences to the victim’s friends and family.”
This type of incident is extremely rare for our city and officers worked around the clock to identify the offender so that Calgarians could feel safe in our city.
Michael John ADENYI, 26, has been charged with first-degree murder and appeared in court today.
Mar.18- Fatal Altercation
On Friday, Mar. 18, 2022, at approximately 3:24 p.m., a man was transported to Foothills Medical Centre with injuries reported to have been sustained from a fall. The man succumbed to his injuries the following day on Saturday, Mar. 19, 2022.
Due to several inconsistencies in the man’s injuries, police were notified, and the Homicide Unit began investigating.
After reviewing the evidence and speaking to those involved, investigators believed that the victim was involved in an altercation prior to his death. The victim and the accused were known to each other, and not related to the earlier random attack in the same area.
Scott MIDFORD, 31, has since been charged with manslaughter and appeared in court today.
The victim’s identity will be released following an autopsy scheduled for Tuesday, Mar. 22, 2022.
Mar. 21- Targeted Shooting
Shortly after midnight this morning, Monday, Mar. 21, 2022, we were called for reports of shots fired at the intersection of 16 Avenue N.W. and 4 Street N.W. Upon arrival, we located one man deceased in the front driver’s side of a 2009 Chevrolet Avalanche.
Witnesses reported that the victim was stopped at the red light in his vehicle when an unknown vehicle pulled up behind the victim’s truck, exited the vehicle, and fired several rounds of gunfire before fleeing east on 16 Avenue N.W.
We believe this to be a targeted incident, and the investigation is ongoing.
“This was a significantly violent attack on a busy road in our city,” says Staff Sergeant Sean Gregson of the CPS Homicide Unit. “While we are still relatively early in the investigation, we are dedicating a number of resources to suppress further violence and hold those responsible accountable.”
