Police investigating serious injury collision

The Calgary Police Service is investigating a serious injury collision that occurred in northeast Calgary early this morning.

At approximately 3:50 a.m., on Thursday, March 10, 2016, a black Nissan Altima was travelling westbound along 32 Avenue N.E. Just west of Deerfoot Trail, the driver lost control on a bend in the road and struck the centre curb. The vehicle then crossed the median and rolled over into oncoming traffic.

The vehicle continued to roll and struck the curb on the edge of the eastbound lane, at which point the vehicle became airborne for approximately 17 metres. The vehicle then landed and collided with large tree before coming to a stop along an embankment beside the road.

No other vehicles were hit as the Altima crossed the oncoming lanes.

The passenger in the vehicle, a man in his 20s, was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition. The driver, also a man in his 20s, was transported to hospital in serious condition.

Police believe that excessive speed and alcohol were both factors in this collision.
