Police investigating serious collision between van and cyclist

We are currently investigating a serious collision that occurred early this morning along Memorial Drive.

At approximately 12:30 a.m., on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2021, an older model Dodge Caravan was travelling east in the right-hand lane of Memorial Drive just past Deerfoot Trail S.E., when it struck a cyclist who was riding along the edge of the road.

After being struck, the 46-year-old male cyclist was projected nearly 20 metres and came to rest on a grassy median. He suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital.

After striking the cyclist, the driver of the van steered left, crossed three eastbound lanes of Memorial Drive and struck the concrete barrier separating Memorial Drive from the LRT right-of-way. The van rolled and came to rest on the passenger side of the vehicle.

The 46-year-old male driver was transported to hospital with serious injuries.

Both the cyclist and the driver of the van were believed to be impaired by alcohol, and the cyclist was also believed to be impaired by drugs. Excessive speed is not being considered as a contributing factor in this collision.

Anyone who witnessed this collision or has dashcam footage from their vehicle is asked to contact the Calgary Police Service using the non-emergency number at 403-266-1234. Tips can also be left anonymously by contacting Crime Stoppers using any of the following methods:
