Police investigating overnight shootings

Early this morning, our officers responded to two unrelated shootings that occurred in quick succession. Both incidents required numerous officers from across the service to respond and investigate, creating a significant impact on police resources this morning. Thanks to the quick response from patrol officers and detectives, we have two individuals in custody, and continue to look for the public’s help to identify and locate additional suspects.

Organized crime shooting in northeast Calgary

At approximately 2:40 a.m., today, Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2023, we responded to numerous reports of gunshots in the area of Temple Drive N.E. and 43 Avenue N.E. Upon arrival, officers located a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds inside a residence located in the 6800 block of Temple Drive N.E. He was transported to hospital in stable condition.

It is believed the victim was outside of the residence with a group of individuals, when a vehicle approached and shots were fired. Multiple rounds of different ammunition were located at the scene, as well as lodged in vehicles and residences along Temple Drive N.E., and Templevale Gate N.E. It is believed shots were fired by both groups. Two individuals who were located inside the residence with the victim were taken into custody without incident and we continue to investigate their involvement in the shooting.

Shortly after this incident, at approximately 3:10 a.m., we responded to reports of a red Jeep Commander on fire in the 0 to 100 block of Saddleland Court N.E. The fire was extinguished, and after further examination, investigators believe this vehicle is related to the shooting in Temple.

Investigators believe this is a targeted shooting with organized crime motivations and that the individuals involved were known to each other.

We are looking for the public’s help to identify additional suspects, who were believed be travelling in a red Jeep Commander, a white Chrysler 300 and a white truck believed to be either a Dodge Ram or GMC Sierra. Anyone who may have witnessed this incident or these vehicles, or has dashcam footage from the following locations, from between 2 and 3 a.m., is asked to contact police.

  • Temple Drive N.E., near Templevale Gate, Templevale Road and 43 Avenue
  • Saddleland Drive N.E., from Saddlecrest Boulevard to 89 Avenue, and near Saddlemont Boulevard

Second shooting not believed to be related

Later, at approximately 3:15 a.m., we were called to the intersection of 5 Avenue and 52 Street S.E., for reports that a man had been shot. Upon arrival, officers located one victim in medical distress. He was transported to hospital by EMS where he remains in serious, but stable, condition.

Investigators located a vehicle, a stolen dark grey Honda Civic a short distance away, which is now believed to be connected to the shooting. Officers are in the process of examining the vehicle, reviewing CCTV and speaking to witnesses to determine potential suspects.

Although this shooting is also believed to have been targeted, this incident is unrelated to the shooting that occurred in Temple.
