Police investigating fatal pedestrian collision

We are investigating a fatal pedestrian collision that occurred last night and are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage to contact police.

At approximately 8:20 p.m., on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2021, a GMC Terrain was travelling south on Macleod Trail S.E. in the right-hand exit lane for westbound Glenmore Trail S.E.

At the same time, two adults and an infant, who was strapped into a stroller, crossed to the triangular raised island placed between the right turn lane and the through travel lanes. They stopped on the raised island in order to cross southbound.

The GMC Terrain failed to make the right-hand curve and continued straight southbound, striking the two adults and the child in the stroller on the raised island.

The vehicle continued south, travelling across two additional raised islands and crossing the exit lane from eastbound Glenmore Trail to southbound Macleod Trail, striking a snowbank at the edge of the road and then sliding to a stop.

The driver of the GMC exited the vehicle and fled on foot. He was apprehended by police a short time later.

The male pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The female pedestrian and the child were transported to Foothills Medical Centre and the Alberta Children’s Hospital, respectively, in serious, life-threatening condition.

Excessive speed and drug use are being investigated as factors in this collision.

Police are looking to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the collision or may have dashcam footage and are asking them to call the Traffic Section at 403-567-4000, or the non-emergency number at 403-266-1234.
