Police investigating fatal pedestrian collision

The Calgary Police Service Traffic Section is investigating after a pedestrian was fatally struck in southeast Calgary today.

At approximately 11:15 a.m., on Friday, April 14, 2017, a black 2012 Toyota Camry was traveling westbound along McIvor Boulevard S.E., when the driver attempted to turn south onto 52 Street S.E. At the same time, a gold 2003 Pontiac Grand Am was traveling east along McIvor Boulevard S.E., and entered the same intersection.

As the driver of the Toyota made the turn, it struck the driver’s side of the Pontiac, causing the driver of that vehicle to lose control. The Pontiac continued eastward and struck a concrete island on the southeast corner of the intersection.

A pedestrian, a 66-year-old man, standing on the island waiting to cross the street was also hit by the Pontiac. The man was pronounced dead on scene.

The drivers of the other vehicles were not seriously injured.

Alcohol is not considered a factor in the collision, however, investigators believe speed may have contributed.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone who witnessed this collision is asked to contact the Calgary Police Service Traffic Section at 403-567-4000. Tips can also be left by contacting Crime Stoppers anonymously using any of the following methods:
