Police investigating death of infant - Update

The Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit continues to investigate the suspicious death of an infant after a body was discovered at a residence in the southeast.

On Friday, Dec. 18, 2020, at approximately 12 p.m., police responded to a check on welfare request for an infant in a residence located in the 100 block of Brightonstone Bay S.E. Upon arrival, police located a deceased infant in the home.

The autopsy was started today, Monday, Dec. 21, 2020, to help investigators determine the cause of the baby’s death. However, infant autopsies often take several weeks or sometimes months to complete. This is due to the highly specialized testing that is required.

For this reason, the name of the infant will not be released until the autopsy and additional medical testing has been completed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Police have spoken to several family members over the weekend who have been co-operative with investigators. Police have not yet been able to speak with the mother of the infant.

Investigators are confident that there is no risk to any other children or to the public as a result of this incident.

Given the sensitivities of this investigation, no further details can be released at this time.
