Police investigating after tire comes off vehicle and injures woman

We are investigating a collision that happened yesterday evening in the city’s northeast during which a wheel came off a vehicle and struck another vehicle, resulting in serious injuries.

On Monday, Dec. 7, 2020, at approximately 5 p.m., a half-ton pickup truck was travelling south on Deerfoot Trail in the lane closest to the median. As the truck approached McKnight Boulevard, the left rear tire and rim of the vehicle became detached. The tire travelled south through the median, crossed over the centre barrier and struck a small sedan travelling north. The tire struck the sedan on the passenger side of the roof causing significant damage to the passenger compartment.

As result of this damage, the woman in the front passenger seat suffered serious, life-threatening injuries. The two male drivers involved did not suffer any injuries in this collision.

Alcohol, drugs and excessive speed are not considered factors in this collision.

We are looking to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the collision and are asking them to call the non-emergency number at 403-266-1234 or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously through any of the following methods:
